I was fortunate enough to get to see this beautiful US-spec fiberglass 308GTB this morning. The local Ferrari club was supposed to meet for breakfast but we had a thunderstorm roll through just before we were supposed to meet. It looked like no Ferraris were going to show up and I only saw three members. I was talking with one member and told him that I would love to see his 'glass 308 sometime. Well, he went home and got it. It's the first fiberglass 308GTB I have ever seen in person. This one won a platinum award at Pebble Beach and a gold at another concourse.
Just thought I would share my pics with you guys.

The fire extinguisher is mounted with a quick release bracket so that he can remove it for a concourse.

    What kind of info?
I know the ignition is all stealth modern technology and the seats and door panels were redone in '93 to original specs. The paint isn't original but the color is. The current owner has owned it since '80 or '81 I believe. Not a trailer queen at all or it wouldn't have been out on the wet roads.

There was a 76 glass car at Cavallino that was new....it won plaitnum. I started a conversation with the owner and he told me he had put about 25 miles on the car in the few months he had owned it. The car had like less than 2000 miles since new. It was then that I realized that my car would never be a show car. How could I compete with cars that go from a garage to trailer to shows. I never planned on winning anything but it was an eye opening experience for me.

The one I posted above has been on most of the tracks across the country so I wouldn't say it's a trailer queen at all. The owner does own several other Ferraris so he only puts less than 1500 miles on each Ferrari every year.

I would like to see a glass car up close as well. One thing I would like to see is a closeup of the A pillar where the "seam" between the fiberglass and the steel is, just to know what it looks like.

Also, on a glass car, what parts are actually fiberglass? The hood and bonnet are still aluminum, right? What about the doors?

I believe it's all 'glass except for the roof. The seam it real small. You have to know to look for it or you won't even notice it. Also, they have a quick release bonnet which becomes completely detached with the pull of two wire loops on the underside of the bonnet (seen in the 8th photo.)
The body is real flexible. You can push your finger down on the top part of the fender and it flexes with ease.
The owner also told me that it's made with a racing grade fiberglass which it totally transparent. He said when it has no paint on it you can see right through the body.

BTW, I am very disappointed in myself for not taking a close-up photo of the A pillar or the bonnet quick release mechanism at the base.

    Mike,
The pics you posted are fantastic and I was glad you took the time to take and post them, so please do not take my request for the A pillar shot as a complaint! I did not know that the bonnet would come off like that. Neat! I wonder why they stopped building them that way?

I know the doors are glass. I have my door panels off as I working on the leather and those doors seem light as hell. Its a neat and simple design.

Yeah, the doors are definitely fiberglass. I could easily tell the difference in the weight when I opened the door.

As far as I know, hood and bonnet are aluminium. But I could be wrong...

Here's a detail of the seam in the passenger side A-pillar. The roof and A-pillars are fiberglass. So are the doors, front and rear clips and front valance. The rear deck is fiberglass as well. The front bonnet is aluminum and the rocker panels are steel. The center section of the rear valance is steel as well to withstand muffler heat.

The bonnets on non-glass cars are always steel, not aluminium. They are quite heavy so the quick release mechanism would be to fragile. Also the risk of dropping the steel bonnet, you would need 3 men to do it, 2 holding the bonnet and 1 pulling the release handles. Just speculating.

Nice car , I looked at a black one a month ago. I was looking for one before I bought my 77 but couldn't find one then. Also this car would look better after it was painted. It is a non-descript color for my taste. Also the glass cars have glass doors but they are light and flimsey.

I was at a car show and heard an interesting version on why the first six months of 308 production were in glass. This fellows reason was that spy photos came out of the new Dino/308 and stopped demand for the old Bertone "Dino" style. For a stop gap measure to still sell the V-8 cars the racing dept. was used to make the new body out of glass till the tooling could be brought onto line for the steel body's which were the plan all along. This fellow clamed Ferrari was really pissed.
PS I always felt the Dry-sump, glass, 308 was the purest of that design, not the most sorted, but pure.. very nice , Fritz
