Anybody here with a Nikon D200?

If so, how do you like it? I have a D50 now, but I really need something better, so the D200 is looking very good to me. Thanks for the input.

What do you mean when you say, you "really need something better"? Is it just megapixels or something else?

I've had one for a few months now and I like it. Photos are sharp, even when enlarged to 16x20. It's a very well built camera, feels good in my hands, it's a tad heavy with the battery pack attached but it balances well with it. File sizes are twice what my D100 were so I'm going to have to get bigger cards. Battery life starts out poor to fair but the more you use them the more shots you get per charge. I will give it a good workout at the next Cavallino Classic.

 

Just out of curiosity, what aspects of the D50 do you want improvement on? I ask because I'm trying to decide which camera to buy. I'm not really considering the D50, but rather the D70s. I'd love to get a 200, but can't justify the extra money.

 

For the questions, I have had my D50 now for a few years, and I just feel that, for the amount of pics I take and sell(more than just cars), I need something better. The megapixel gain is nice, but that isn't what makes me really want one. I held one in Wolf Camera yesterday and it felt awesome. I also like the software it uses a lot better than the D50s. To me, the D50 is too "I take pictures occasionally and don't really ever fiddle with the ISO, white balance, etc.". I have been comparing a lot of pics I took to some that my friend took with his D200, and there is a huge difference. Don't get me wrong-the D50 is a great camera, but I think it's just too beginner-oriented and doesn't give me the ability to change as many aspects of a picture like the D200 does.

I'd like to know. Their prices are the lowest I've seen. Is it one of those no-warranty things?

 

I looked closer at the site, and while the equipment looks legit, it appears that the packages don't include a battery. For the D200, that's another $200-$400.

 

The warranty is extra, and it's pretty expensive.

 

I had a feeling that it might not include a battery. A lot sites do that so that they can have really low prices.

 

Yeah, it had to be something. I've posted this link before, but there's a great shop in Chicago that's been around forever. They have pretty good prices and don't play games. It's www.central-camera.com.

 

I have a d200, it is a great camera. I absolutely love it. If I remember right, you usually have to buy the battery seperate, and they are around $40. I got the vertical grip-so I had to buy 2 batteries. I got mine at Samys camera, which is only in california...but they have a website you can buy from. Also, try BHphotovideo.com they are usually slightly less expensive than Samys or Calumet on certain things.

BTW...Nikon just came out with a D80...it has 10.2 megapixels like the d200, but a different body.

Anyways...the D200 is awesome...i believe the largest print you can make w/o interpolating at all is 11X14...but you can interpolate to at least a 16X20 without the image quality suffering. Its a GREAT camera!!!

Thanks. I knew the Nikon just came out with the D80, but the stats (besides megapixel) don't even rival the D50.

 

12 Mega pixels makes the difference w/ the D200. The D70 is a vary fine camera at 6.1MP - all you need for 8x12s at under $1,000.00. The D70 is far superior to the $5,000.00 D1 pro camera I also have.

i just got my D200 last week an i love it. so far there are no problems, its just smooth sailing. if you go with it i would strongly suggest going with the nikkon- nokkor 15-200 VR lense. its incredible

 

If you meant 18-200 VR lens, then that is what I was planning on getting with it.

 

A friend of mine (kyle cassidy) is a pro photog as well and usually uses leicas but he also owns a nikon D200 which he loves. Highly Recommended.

 

I just ordered a D200 from 42nd St. Photo. They had really good prices and good reviews on Cnet.com. Have any of you ordered anything from them? I can't wait for it to get here!

After hearing bad things about 42nd St, I cancelled the order and re-ordered from ButterflyPhoto.com. They were great. The camera finally came in today. It's just amazing. Thanks for all the help guys.

I shoot with a D2X (and have owned a D70, D100, and D200) and love it. It's pricey but worth it. Anyway, if you can wait a few weeks, get the D80. The specs are nearly identical to the D200 but stuffed into a smaller (and probably a little "cheaper" body). It's definitely going to be the best buy for a camera body for a little while.

The D80 seems to be based on the D50 "platform"; it even uses SD cards rather than Compact Flash. Not that that's bad or anything...

 

The D200 package includes one battery and charger. Extra batteries are about $40.00 each. I had a D100 and the difference in build quality is very apparent, plastic vs metal body. The D200 feels solid and well built, plus all of the buttons and doors are o-ring sealed against moisture intrusion (NOT water proof!). If you are going to buy one, go to a reputable dealer and get a US D200. Grey market cameras aren't covered under US warranty. They may be cheaper than US cameras until you try to get them serviced here, Nikon USA won't touch them!

 

Wow. Those D2Xs are huge! I hated the D80. The shutter speed is even slower than my D50! The D200 has been way better than I could have ever hoped for. I'm so glad I didn't get the D80. It's just an over-all better camera.
