Is it possible? Is the execution better, worse or the same as manual?

I do something like a J-turn to get out of my driveway. As long as you maintain a speed that doesn't require clutch slip, then it's pretty smooth. If you slow below that point, then the maneuver can get a bit jerky; but I get similar behavior moving forward in stop & go traffic.

I would assume it would be similar to doing it in an automatic, as you don't have full control over the clutch/gear....and I've ruined an auto tranny doing j-turns.

I would not want to try it in an F1, as the only italian F1 I've owned was at 5k miles and already had glitches in the operation of the tranny. Something tells me things would start breaking, fast.

A J-turn is driving the car in reverse, disengaging clutch, using e-brake and turning the steering wheel simultaneously to make the car turn 180, then shifting into first and engage clutch to go forward. Done fast it is a trick maneuver to reverse direction and evade something in front of you that can't be steered around.

My comment about "something like a J-turn" is that I go through somewhat similar motions, but about 100x slower :D.

I have never driven an F1 before, but have done many a "J-Turn". I also call this a reverse 180. When in reverse on an F1, does the transmission go into neutral before 1st or is it from reverse straight to 1st?

Since I have not driven an F1 I can't confirm, but I know it can be done in an F1. However, timing is of the utmost importance. I'm in Chicago this week if anyone wants to volunteer their F1 for a test. :) The IKEA parking lot is sooo nice. :)

I did a 270 degree J-turn in a 1993 Nissan Sentra a few years ago backing out of a CVS parking lot a few years ago in the middle of the night... The car didn't stall as I expected it would, but it was a little slow moving forward after I put it in drive from reverse after I flung it around...

Might wanna wait more than an hour for people to respond............. but yeah I don't see why this would be a problem. I can't think of a reason I'd need to do this, but don't see why it couldn't be done. F1 is afterall still a manual tranny and operates identically to one with 3 pedals and a shifter.

The transmission goes from reverse straight into 1st. My experience has been with putting my F1 into 1st while the car is still in motion going backward after being in reverse is that the transmission stalls. It is very hard to stall an F1 and I've done it twice doing that same maneuver.

I'm trying to envision this as a driver. With the car stopped, I lift the lever and move it into R. The indicator switches to R. I jam down on the pedal and the car moves backward quickly. I turn the wheel quickly to swing the front end over and around....and at some point I need to pull back on both paddles to get the car to N, then right paddle once to 1. Hmmmm. Not as easy as thought.

Give the car with an F1 tranny to a stunt driver who does this in his sleep and see what they can make of it.

Why do you have to put the car in neutral? I never put my car in neutral unless I'm doing banking at an drive-thru atm.

Hey buddy! Still at square one for the next car--either 911/997 turbo, F360, or Gallardo in that order. F1 tranny seemed kind of clumsy in reverse on Lamour's 360 so now I'm a little concerned about doing emergency maneuvers. Figured there had to be at least one hardcore driver out there who's tried J-turns with an F1. Luckily there was one.
