OK, was just looking at the old open wheeled Merc posted by Waz and it got me wondering, as I have never driven an open wheeler, does it make a car easier to drive on the track if the wheels are exposed or enclosed ?

Sure you can see what they're doing but does it improve your track times ?

and I know most open wheelers are formula cars for the most part but I'm more interested in cars that resemble road cars but the wheels are exposed or have the guards that move with the wheels.

I was watching Fangio in that legendary clip where he is on an aerodrome driving around the track and you can see his input as the tyres flex and counter the cars oversteer and wonder if this is an aid in helping drive the car , also watching Alan De Cadenet in VBD in the 312P using the push-pull method is informative as he has no view of the wheels but his smooth driving style is a pleasure to watch

well I know you and Scott have drive open wheelers and I'm sure others have

..and no Speedy, karts don't count because you do things in karts you can't do in real open wheelers, like pre-load the wheels by moving your body and leaning all the way out to improve the CoG as you go round a corner

I'd have asked Fangio but he isn't taking my calls for years now :(

    yes....and i was faster :) haha...i'm funny.

anyway.....obviously any open wheeler is better to drive than any road car, as they're specificially designed for racing. I think your question is would that same open wheeler be better if it had bodywork over it. i'd say probably yes, as it would have superior aerodynamics.....but then, i might be wrong. only phillipa knows for sure.

well, the Le Mans boys drive for 24 hours with enclosed F1 cars in reality but when it comes down to precision for a concentrated period (~2 hours for the F1 boys) they go for open wheelers.

Now if F1 is the ultimate  and the drivers are that good, then surely they would revert to enclosed bodies for the "ultimate" performance as they did back in the 50s with the Mercs ???

You are making an assumption that you can actually see the front wheels in a current F1. I'm not certain, but I would suggest not - especially when the driver "submarines" under brakes.

John, get yourself along to a Formula Ford driver training day, I would guess that someone does this in QLD but if not, Ian Luff runs them at Oran Park in Sydney.

After you've spent a day having a fantastic time, have a careful look where your feet are in relation to the front axles and think what would happen if you hit a wall. That will cure you of any interest to compete in OHOS open wheelers!
