So, this afternoon, I saw this blog entry on TechDirt, entitled, "If Pachelbel Were Alive Today, Would He Be Suing YouTube"...
    http://techdirt.com/articles/20060828/105604.shtml

It was a timely article, considering the thread here on FChat a few days back regarding guitar tabs and copywrite law in general.

I then read the NY Times post that it linked to:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/27/arts/television/27heff.html?ei=5090&en=b993c2e50a7b705d&ex=1314331200&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=all

Which was an interesting lead-in to "sweeping", a guitar technique I had never really played with before. The article also lead me to the website of the arranger of the YouTube video in question, and I kept getting lost in different articles out of the sheer enjoyment of it all.

Here was the YouTube video mentioned in both articles:

What do you guys think of any of the above???

I saw the article too. It suggested that this might spark a revival of interest among the young in classical guitar.
If any guitarists chime in here, I'd also be interested in your take on Joe Bonamassa. I got turned on to him only recently and am very impressed with his work on the album "You and Me." I like electric blues alot, and he has a good, hard-edged sound. What do you think?

I saw this vid awhile ago. Amazing work, I wish i could play like that!

Sweep picking has been a trick of the trade for guitarists for a long time. Listen to Micheal Angelo, Steve Vai, Satch, Malmstein, etc for this. It was also used alot in the hairbands, but got to the point where nobody cared anymore, and it became the thing "not" to do.

I think its a really cool trick, but it must be used correctly, not just for flash. The video shows a really good use of it, and it doesn't sound like the player is trying just to impress with his speed.

The sweeping technique can be very interesting, especially when combined with Maj/Min/Dim/Aug arpeggios across various combinations of strings.

    Hi Whart,

They play his stuff on XM. From what I have heard, there is nothing special about it. General club level player at best.

Just my $.02, no intent to offend:)

I'd heard Brian Setzer mention it in a rockabilly segment on some guitar show, but I never thought to look it up at the time.

After I read all about it, I watched the YouTube video again and concentrated on his right hand. Most people, I'm guessing, pay almost no attention to the right hand when they're watching someone play the guitar - they're watching the left finger the notes. Kind of strange hearing a flurry of notes while the right hand is completely controlled going in a downward or upward motion.

I would love to study classical guitar. As a kid, though, all your friends want to do is play crap, and as an adult, you have no time to do anything but work and play on fchat! :)

Sweeping is more of a picking hand technique, at least for me it is considering I'm a lefty playing right handed guitar.
