Anyone else here like to go for midnight drives...? I went to the Dragon on Saturday night and had a really nice time... The world - especially the mountainous, one-lane-each-way, already-peaceful world is so serene and enjoyable in the middle of the night...

I'm always up for a drive; let me know...

Damn dude, you should've let me know. I live 30 mins from there. I've never been up there at night. I hear that's when all the fast ones come out.

I doubt that - 'cause I'm not very fast on the Dragon and there's usually NO ONE else out there for miles... Incidentally - with my luck - three trailers were on their way up as I was on my way down... Two were gone before I made it back and one pulled over for me on my way back up...

The drive through the national forests is beautiful in the middle of the night...

Way back the day when I was young and very foolish, I rode a Honda CBR600 F2 sport bike. I ran race compound tires, supertrapp pipe, trick induction setup.... that bike was CRAZY fast.

I use to go up to the mountains alone very late at night to ride hard frequently. In the winter, I would put long johns on under the leathers along with a baklava hood and head out about 10pm from Athens and return around dawn. With no leaves on the trees its very easy to spot headlights coming and your able to tell when you can use the entire road and when not. Typically, you could ride all night and only see maybe 1-2 other cars and then usually only on the main roads.

I rode like a maniac... as only a young man is stupid enough to do. 10/10ths, using the entire road and sometimes more.. absolutely addictive. I had several bike friends who woudl sometimes go with me, but most it was honestly more fun on your own as you didnt have to keep track of someone else. Plus, as Carbon points out, the mountains in the still of the night are incredibly beautiful.

That bike of course ultimately came this close to killing me and now I get the speed fix in cars on the track. I shudder to think what would have happened had I gone off one night in a major way. Quite possibly could have lain in a deep ravine totally busted up dying the long slow way....

Wouldnt do it again, but no regrets!

That makes me wonder if there are people out there that are never found.

It was a beautiful, wonderful evening...

Terry, lane-crossing kills - there are signs like that all over the trees on the Dragon - and I know those signs are meant mainly for car drivers, so they don't kill cyclists... Glad you're still around; sounds like you were really a "balls out" kinda guy when you were younger...

Also, no leaves on the trees usually means they're all on the ground - I was expecting a far worse ending to your post...

Love to drive the dragon, trailered my car to Glatlinburg and made the run. Did it in daylight.

    Uhh, deer.

Maybe because I managed to hit two in one shot while I lived in Oregon that is why I'm more cautious at night in the mountains. But I do feel what you guys are saying, it can be a blast if everything goes right.

man, a sport bike on the dragon at night ? that takes some mighty big schnitzvah's..

Carbon, great idea man. love the way you think my brother. Dragon at midnight.

anyone ever see the movie No Mans Land ? Chuck Sheen is a Porsche thief in LA and would frequent Mullholland Drive late at night and do some heel toe shifting with passengers. great movie.

Never saw it, but sounds like a good rent...

Let me know if you're ever up for a midnight Dragon run... Would be lots of fun...

Martin, I've never seen a deer in the four times I've been up there (three at night)... I did, however, see two dogs the last two times I went... Didn't hit either of them, but they were still in the road... Neither one was actually on the Dragon though...
