I am replacing the carpet in an office/hallway. Getting a commercial grade, midgrade nylon, with the thicker padding. Now, I need help with colors. Specifically, the carpet I want is a darker beige, with some scattered colors throughout.

My brain tells me that a dark carpet will hide stains better, and require less maintenance...

BUT, the hallway/office don't get a lot of light, and I don't want to darken the place up any further...

Has anyone here used a beige type carpet in a semi-commercial application with success??? Was it a nightmare? Did you have to shampoo it every week??? Did it wear ok

Oh Lord, it's scary I actually know something about this...

Commercial carpet is great, what you need to look for is a type 6,6 nylon, there is a commercial grade pad they put this over. We use it in our trading rooms and it wears like iron, but it is not "homey".

If I were an accountant working at home or my office didn't get high traffic flow I wouldn't go with it- it's too industrial for my tastes.

The company I work for is adding a 2nd building at our location, construction started last week. The facility manager said specifically that fixtures and furniture were going to be roughly the same, but that they were going to go with darker carpet in the new building. The lighter shade they picked for the current building showed too many stains.

Yes, darker colors will hide spots(spots can be cleaned out, stains are forever) such as coffee, oil and printer toner dust well. However, white particulates such as confetti and paper shreds will be obvious. Interior decorators hate dark carpet because it soaks up light sources, but ohh well.

Less maintenance means that you don't use that area as much. Traffic lanes, areas of the carpet where people will be standing or walking at any given time will require more cleaning than say a conference room area. What eventually happens is the tuffts will squash down and all the dirt and dust people track in will cause an abrasion to the fibers as that area is stepped on.

Cleaning can be done every month. I cringe when I see carpet cleaners with brush head cleaners because as if the carpet didn't need any additional "sanding" by the people that walk on it. Steam cleaning is the the cleanest and less abrasive type of cleaning technique. Teflon or Scotch Guard is not a gimmick, it buys you enough time in between cleanings to help preserve the carpet. It takes the blunt of the abuse, not the carpet. Hopefully this info helps.
