I am looking at a 328 with the CAT removed. Owner has the CAT. Says it can be put on for testing fairly easily. It is not a Texas car. So, if I buy it, It would have to be inspected and have the emissions tested in order for me to register the car in Texas.

Anyone had any problems in doing this? How easy is it to put the cat back on? Isn't there a sensor or something that has to be there in the cat as well? Anyone had trouble with emissions on the 328?

    Thanks

I bought my 328 almost a year ago. It was a CA car (was in Houston for 6 months, but owner did not title it in TX). The Cat was off and got it with the purchase. Has a Tubi / Straight pipe. I took it in for inspcection with the Cat off. Figured I would try this first... and could always put the Cat back on and "re-inspect" it.... It "passed" with no Problems.
As you were told.... I was told the same thing about the ease to put the Cat back on if needed. (3-4 bolts). Hope that helps... Good luck.

Here's a pic of a hyperflow cat for a 328. There's 6 bolts (3 at each end), plus the 02 sensor and the temperature probe. In addition, you'll need to remove the guard under the pipe itself, 10 or so 10mm bolts. Takes me about an hour to swap the part.

Wow - I would not have ever imagined a 328 passing emissions without a CAT on.

Tillman - so its not a big deal - you just remove your pipe and put in the CAT - then get it inspected and remove the CAT and put the pipe back in?

I am looking at couple of cars, one has all stock exhaust, the other has the CAT removed with a Stebro. I was just worried about buying the out of state car and then going through heck to get it passed, but seems like that is not too big a deal.

    Thanks

Yes - up to 24 years back - so I think that means an 82 or newer.

    From DPS's web page-
    Low Mileage Waiver
There is a low mileage exemption for motorists who drive less than 5000 miles/year. To qualify for this exemption you must:
    1. Fail both the initial test and free retest
    2. Incur $100 of emissions related repairs
(this is for parts only if you get work done at a non-approved facility. found out from the inspection garage a work around is to get an emission diagnostic exam and an oil change from an approved facility and that covers the $100)
    3. Drive less than 5,000 miles/year

you have to make an appointment at DPS, where they go over your paperwork and then re-inspect the car for a third time! Oh and they only take money orders (no personal checks, no cash) which they DON'T indicate on their web page.
Needless to say I'm registering it in the antique class the minute it hits 25 years. what a PITA!

I'm being real technical, (and well past 25 years on my 1977s), but the Inspection is supposed to verify, based upon your door jamb sticker, CAT vs. NON CAT criteria, and verify it is there, prior to the sniff.

But we recently saw a 1979 go by thru Dallas dealer with a clever FRADULANT
    "1979 NON CAT" label..

    Clever, very clever.

The point of it all is to have your engine tuned properly, via 4 gas analyzer.
Bad numbers mean something is wrong. My 1977s without air pumps or thermal muffler will pass criteria if all four carbs and all ignition is properly calibrated.

Big Al you should have seen Moorespeed and chased down the problem, don't you think? Although the waiver 'worked' you are driving with something out of wack....so to speak.

That's where I took it and believe me they tried just about everything. There's nothing "out of whack" per se other than it prob needs new cats. Its running great and David says its one of, if not the fastest 308 in Austin.
