I just took action to end the brutal slaughter of Alaska's wolves through aerial gunning at http://action.defenders.org/savewolvesalter and I hope you'll join me. More than 150 wolves have already been shot dead under the state's brutal aerial gunning program so far this year. The Alaska Board of Game allows marksmen shoot wolves from aircraft, or use low-flying airplanes to chase the wolves, run the helpless creatures to exhaustion, then gun them down at point-blank range once they're too tired to run any further. So far, the Bush administration has refused to use its power to stop the slaughter of these magnificent animals. We must stop the slaughter of Alaska's wolves. Help me protect these magnificent creatures by clicking the link below to send a free message to President Bush and Interior Secretary Kempthorne urging them to enforce the Federal Airborne Hunting Act before it's too late for Alaska's wolves. Please go to http://action.defenders.org/savewolvesalter to take action now. Then forward this message to your friends and family and ask them to join you. Thanks for helping to protect our precious wolves.
I just sent it. I can't believe that there are pinheads out there who take enjoyment from that. Thanks for bringing this outrage to my attention.
There are two sides to every coin. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but I will hold off judgement until I can gather information for myself to make an informed opinion.
That sounds pretty disgusting. What does the gunman get out of this? Practice, something else? The only reason they are shooting them is for target practice?
It is a crime to shoot from any type of motorized conveyence for any regulated type of sport hunting that I am aware of. It sounds to me more like population control.
Absolute population control. Are these animals magnificent? Absolutely. However their numbers outstrip the resources needed to keep them alive and they die an absolutely horrible death from starvation and disease. It is a shame that any animal should have to be put down like this however when the food sources start to get low the domestic animals and small children of the area can be a great meal replacement for these animals.
How can people machine gun wolf cubs from an airplane?????????? It's easy, you don't lead them as much. Seriously though, shooting wolves from the air seems like a ridiculous practice in these modern times, it seems like we could drop napalm on them or something.
Dennis Leary comes to mind, "What are you?" "I'm an Otter" "And what do you do?" "I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands." "You may pass" "And what are you?" "I'm a cow." "Get on the truck" "But I'm an animal, I have rights too!" "you're a baseball mit; get on the truck."
I'm just wondering if wolves can't live in Alaska, where in the hell can they live? Too bad they don't like middle eastern country's.
I care about Caribou Wolf Management in Alaska with an Historic Perspective http://www.wc.adfg.state.ak.us/index.cfm?adfg=wolf.wolf_mgt Wolf Control in Alaska http://www.wc.adfg.state.ak.us/index.cfm?adfg=wolf.control Overview of Relationships Between Bears, Wolves, and Moose in Alaska http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/management/planning/mcgrath/pred_prey.cfm?
Come on now Mark, you're not thinking about the environment. In the hearts of environmentalists, napalm leaves a toxic residue that contaminates the area exposed, perhaps an anti-personnel cluster bomb(MK-20) with its steel shards will complete the same objective with much care to the environment as steel rusts into the soil.
They have to control the population. basicly its a chain reaction. More of them, more of the pray gets eat'n. Now there is less pray for the ever growing poplulation, more of them start to starve or move closer to human populated areas in search of food. And so on and so forth.
Hey Justin! Actually I am serious. The CDC is next door to Emory Univ where I went for a few years. In about 1991 the CDC actually declared Polio nearly eradicated from the planet. And they were going to nuke their samples of it. We had a two week picket of no less than the Seara Club and Green Peace because Polio was now endangered. I couldn't believe it!!!
My deep appreciation to fellow FChatters who've responded with compassion and concern. This is but the latest, and one of the more tragic chapters in the plight of wolves on this continent. Defenders of Wildlife http://www.defenders.org/ is one of the most actively-involved groups in wolf conservation, but is - as its website indicates - interested in many other species as well.
