I've got like 300 episodes of the Simpsons in various media types, such as wmv, avi, mpg, ra, etc.

If I get an ipod video, will I be able to upload these files to it?

What about ripping DVD feature length movies onto the ipod? Is that doable?

Yeah, there are a bunch of programs that you can use to convert files to ipod video format. Are you using a PC or a Mac?

Whats the battery life like? WIll it get me through a whole 2hr movie?

I've borrowed a friend's PSP and love the battery life, it will play movies/games for about 4 hours on each battery.

Ok, first thing to look at is the size of the files you are thinking about. At anywhere near dvd quality 300 episodes would be what? 300gbs??? Maybe 200gbs at best??? So no way in hell on any MP3 player on the market. And even if you say they are 1/2 dvd quality, why would you want them as the picture is going to suck. Also, we are talking about a 2x2 INCH screen. Who in there right mind would watch 300 or even 1 episode of anything on an iPod?

At 60gbs MAX, you would get maybe 12 movies at any sort of decent quality of video strength on an iPod. And then on the 2x2 INCH screen, you would only watch them if you were on a desert island with flat out nothing else to do.

    Another dumb hypothetical question.

Lets hypothetically say that I just found an old hard drive with lots of downloaded music that may or may not have been downloaded legally. Will I tunes allow me to put those on the Ipod or does the music have to be downloaded through I tunes?

An upgraded 5G iPod is rumoured to be released on September 12th, followed by a full touch screen one in early 2007. You might want to wait until the 12th before you buy.

And regarding the question in post #8, it does not have to be downloaded through iTunes. You can import from another source into the library.

BTW, if you are using a mac, download Handbrake (can convert movies to .m4v format for ipod.)

Just make sure that it's in a MP3 format. I did that with my collection & no problems yet transferring them to my ipod nano.
