Deepest condolences to Steve's family. He was a great ambassador for Australia. Hopefully his legacy regarding animals and conservation will be continued by his wife and children in the years to come.

Sorry, but this is just plain untrue. You may have thought he was just a moron (and many did), but the guy did so much more than the TV stuff. He was an ardent conservationist, director of the Australia Zoo, frequent spokesperson for preservation and conservation, and more...

    +1, from another state-side Fchatter.

    Mmmmmm, really?
According to the news reports here, he was filming a "documentary" called
" Oceans Deadliest" , the report goes on to say he was in shallow water, the ray was aboout 2.5 metres accross, he swam over it.......

Oh, by the way, the Australia Zoo is not a national thing as it implies. It is a zoo on the sunshine coast north of Brisbane which he was associated with. If you google the zoo, amongst other things, you will find such things as "With ten shows daily, you can get your adrenalin pumping as you watch crocodiles launch a strike from the water's edge"

I can only say that having been diving for over 25 years, I wouldn't swim over a large ray particularly in shallow water unless the rewards justified the risk.

I've been diving since 83 and have always given rays a wide berth because of the barb, they run off most of the time but I've never found them to be timid about divers, had many a ray cruise straight over the top of my head.

Sharks OTOH seem far less threatening when I'm on scuba then rays while snorkelling.

Ever had ocean whites come up to you on hooker Steve ?

had a cheeky one want his photo taken when I was in Fiji, freaked me out how close he came to me :D

Must say, some of the things Steve Irwin did, it only seemed like a matter of time before something went wrong but hasn't he lived a few lifetimes in the years he's been around !??

Steve was closer to Businessman of the Year than Conservationist of the Year. His appearances on American TV were surely more about driving revenue for his property than saving creatures from extinction. He didn't sit on his backside - he took his message straight to his biggest market.

I admire Steve for all he achieved, including an awesome P&L statement. We can all learn a lot from his attitude and energy.

I have or had the greatest admiration for the guy. Me, my wife and my daughter watched him on TV regularly for many years. I had a phone call from her at work telling me the news, she only calls me when I forget something ;), so I know it must of upset her.

I feel sorry for his family and you guys. He may of made sensational TV, but I firmly believe he did it for the cause and to make people aware. Yes he probably got quite rich out of it but I believe he did for the love not the money.

I for one am quite saddened and with out trying to sound like a big limey girl, have only ever been been bothered by the the death of two other celebs (people I have never actualy met in person) and one was the Princess of Wales and I ain't no Royalist.

Australia and the world has lost an Ambassador for wildlife. Think they were his friends words but I agree 100%

:D Steve Irwin made me realise you lot down under are good bunch ;)

My condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad for his loved ones and his many admirers, was a genuine guy.Turned on the TV tonight and felt sic there was that rat on TV in a green safari shirt with a lizard on the shoulder crapping on,all for the ratings and at the expense of Irwin. They should do a story on her and her public behaviour!

Only once (that I know of) and luckily he was just curious and not aggressive.

Btw, I think a hooker is a lady of ill repute. :)
SSBA (surface supplied breathing apparatus) are also known as hookah.

You must be getting close to heading off for your trek to the deep south, don't forget your woolies. The last 3 days of winter were warm and sunny, first 4 of spring have been crap so far.

To be scientific about it, the former supplies heavy breathing whilst the later just supplies normal breathing....unless you see a white :)

whats the deal with being confronted by a white while diving anyway? is it just a 50/50 chance as to whether it bites you in half or not???

yeah, they bite 50% first time and then come back for the remaining 50%

oceanic whites are different to Great Whites, they are more inquisitive and less likely to bite but then they are all wild animals and if they are hungry enough anything will do.

Only seen 2 GWs and one tiger shark, the tiger was in Storm Bay at Kiama and the GWs were off Stradbroke in about 20 metres of water
