1982 308 value

The 1980-1982 308s are recognized as the least desireable because they are slower and have some other issues. This is what I have read time and time again. The 308 QVs 1983-1985 are supposed to be the best, fastest, and most refined of the 308s. Some people still preffer the earlier carbed fiberglass and metal cars.

Price- most guides suggest that 1980-82 cars sell for less but that isint always true. I have seen plenty of these selling for healthy sums. I will say this, it is probably possible to get a nice QV with less than 40k miles for $35-40k. $35k for an 82 seems like too much....the car would have to be very, very nice. Be sure to get a PPI.

 

I think $35 is a touch too high, but not out of the ballpark. I'd like to think that my nice 80 2V is worth about $25-$27 with 40K miles so a car a couple of years newer and fewer miles should be worth a little more than that.

2V's on paper are often called the least desirable range of cars. My car has been very good in my 6 years of ownership and overall hasn't let me down too much. As for the performance issues between 2V & 4V, you have to ask yourself if that minimal performance and minimal perceived increase in value is something that will matter to you....?

Any 308 2V or 4V will have a hard time hanging with a modded rice wagon or even my wifes ex-220HP Camry. If you want/need performace that is going to keep up with todays car area, you'll be out of the $20K-$30K range pretty quickly.

If you want a neat car and don't have to prove yourself at each stoplight there is nothing wrong with a 2V.

And finally not to muddy the waters, but it's always something of a crap shoot with these cars (even with records). There have been many stories on F-chat where a guy bought an up to date car and ended up spending tons of $ getting all the service things redone shortly after purchase. My veiw is to buy a car that is already discounted because of lack of service and get it done under your ownership, that way you know it's done and up to date.

I have been watching prices closely for sometime and I concur, 35K is on the high side.

 

while there have been several 80-82 cars for sale recently in the 35K+ range, i think it is too much. as described, without surprises, i would put a range of 28-30K for it. but, good 308s under 30K are getting rarer, as they should because they are really neat cars.

i had an 82 and that car consumed huge amounts of oil. i would go through a quart every 175 miles. i have heard that there was some sort of recall on the engines in the 80 - 82 2 valve cars. some one told me that fna would have records of that. if so, it may be worth checking on that. all in all, based on my experiences, i would go with the 83-85 4 valve cars.

I would certainly get it inspected ("PPI") by a reputable local Ferrari mechanic, with a focus on the oil-burning issue posted above as well as the usual issues (compression, frame damage from an accident, etc.)

Check for rust - bottom of the doors especially. Ferrari didn't start rustproofing till 1984, and Minnesota is a little rougher on cars than LA or Phoenix. For $35K you should find no rust.

Check all the electrical stuff - lights, signals, windows (weak spot). 308 electricals are bad in general - Birdman on this board sells a fuse block upgrade that apparently can help a lot. The factory fuse block design was junk.

I agree with the posts about performance. An '82 is about as slow a Ferrari as you can buy, so decide whether you're OK with that. My '87 328 is about 55-60bhp up on a 2V 308 and a bit lighter, and it is a 'quick' car, but certainly no stormer.

Make sure the recent 30K major service included the belts and tensioner bearings. A water pump rebuild at the same time is desirable. There are many cars for which people say 'belt service done' and it means they took it over to the Arco station and had Biff stick a new belt on it. It sounds like the one you found was maintained more conscientiously than that, but $35K takes into account a recent major service ($3K-$4K usually), so I'd want to know what that it was done properly.
