How does one hook up a radar detector (in my case a V1)? My cigarette lighter is an odd device into which one apparently (I'm a non-smoker) inserts a cigarette to light it. Not compatible with standard lighter socket plugs, in any case.

You have three choices. Run a pigtail after-market lighter housing off of the in-board one, run it off of a battery pack or don't get caught.

You're correct, the standard power plug in for the detector will not work in the Dino's "cigar" style lighter. Buy the V1 Direct-Wire Power Adapter $13/$19

then connect it directly to a power source and ground so your V1 can plug into it.

Some find they like to attach it to a switched circuit at the fuse box then run it up through/near the dash vents resulting in a minimum of exposed wires.

    dinodan,

I bought a generic brand coiled 12vDC power extension cord (Radio Shack/Advance Auto - - female end to accept your V1 power cord and male end to plug into a standard lighter receptacle). I cut off the male end (ouch!) and threaded the wire through an opening inside of the Dino glove box. I then threaded it toward the radio backplate where I tapped into the radio power source which had an in-line fuse (good). I connected the ground wire in the cord to one of the studs that mounts the voltage regulator. This makes for a very unobtrusive set-up. Your V1 cord goes into the closed glovebox (hopefully the cord's not too thick to keep it from closing) and the connection is totally out of sight and won't be disturbed.

    Good luck,

    Bill

Excellent suggestion as I also found it difficult to get through to the firewall.

Does anyone else have carpet panels on the underside of the dash where other cars have an opening? If I lay down on the floor and look up then I see carpet, not bare wiring looms or connections.
    Thank you

    Yup.

I have freakin' carpet everywhere, including BEHIND the glovebox.

    Scott -

I assume we'll see you at Gary's this Saturday (9/9/2006) and I'll bring our 246 down so you can see how we installed the connection for the V-1. Maybe we can take a few pics and post them.

    Dear Mark Mark,

Thank you for the offer, I'm curious to see it.
I'm attending and bringing berry pastry and French Medoc.

For our recent tour into Canada with the Lambo guys I decided to wire the V-1 through the glovebox as dinodriver suggested. Worked great and when I parked I just threw everything in the glove box.
Clever and convenient arrangement, thank you.

    Politically Correct statement:
I don't condone speeding or breaking the law, but have a V-1 so I know who is watching me.

I have a battery-powered Solo, and was tooling along at about 70 in a 65 when a trooper pulls me over and writes me up for going 87. Said he'd radared me, but the detector never went off. I'm pretty sure it picks up their brand of gun, as it regularly goes nuts when they've got a trap set up lower down the same highway.

He said he' seen a black Mustang just ahead of me really hauling ass but couldn't get out fast enough to pursue him. Comforting. So he picks up the slick-looking Dino instead. I'm gonna fight it, but how do you tell a Court that your RADAR DETECTOR didn't go off, so the cop is lying??

Anyhow, any reason not to just go to a battery powered detector and forget the crummy cords??

And, if your Dino is like my Dino, the speedo is way off. Mine is 10% + over. Checked it the other day, again, with a GPS, after pacing with another modern car at the speed limit.

I think you have a good case, and can argue that you were not speeding at all as a first step. Then I'd follow with the argument that the radar gun could not have gotten you as the detector you use didn't go off. (They aren't illegal in NY are they?) I would check manufacturers specs to see what bands it catches, then check with the PD to see what type of gun they use, what band it uses, etc. They have to give you the info as a part of discovery, I would assume.

It's a real lousy situation. First, where I got the ticket, a tiny little town in Putnam County about 65 miles north of NYC turns out to be the third busiest court in the State of NY (busier than most New York CITY courts!) -- they are at the intersection of two big highways, and they have full time speed traps out, writing hundreds of tickets. This is how they carry their local budget -- by soaking people driving through. The Trooper seemed to feel bad. But I get the trick -- he writes me up for a heavy speed, then agrees to negotiate a lesser charge so I don't fight it, and just pay a big fine to keep all those points off my license (Hey, anyone in a Dino can afford hundreds of bucks to do this -- the insurance surcharge alone is $500-$1000 a year at that level!). He knows the Judge is going to back him up no matter what -- this is what pays his salary. (They should develop an EZ Pass system, where everyone just pays a speeding surcharge to go through. The AVERAGE speed on those roads is about 80. I was getting passed by beat up Camrys at 70-72!)

The good news is that I'll take a shot at negotiating or fighting it, then, whatever the outcome, see if the NY Times will take a story on the town and its court. I am a journalist, after all!
Oh, btw, Dave - your car looked nice in that Times online section.. posted mine, too...

Insurance surcharge for one ticket is $1000.00?
