Ok, this might not be the proper place for this thread, but its worth a try.

At my workplace, there's been an ongoing Lotto pool for a while sometimes $100, sometimes $1000+ on big pots. I played once in a while on the big pots.

Now the person that used to handle this is gone, and my boss has "assigned" me the duty of buying & checking the office lotto pool. Worse part is its supposed to be a "fun" thing and I am not supposed to do it on work hours.

I m kinda feeling screwed here since it would take obviously a long time to play and check 1000 ticket, not to mention I could get robbed taking $1000 to a 7-11.

I was thinking of taking a "$50" service fee for my labor / time ect ect out of the pool on the big $$ pots. Ofcourse I would let people know I am doing that, and not "steal" from the pot.

Do you think this is a good / legal idea? Can any lawyers chime in on this?

    What do you guys suggest?

How does your office do your lotto pool?

If you rarely get in on it, how did you get "nominated"?

I only play on "big pots" but I guess I am very "enthusiastic" when I play.

    LOL.

i don't see any problems, so long as everyone knows what you're doing, although i'm sure there will be a few whiners complaining about how they could have gotten 50 more dollars worth

As long as your boss approves of this and it is sort of a fun company thing, then I see no problem. It's not that big of a deal taking 1k to a 7-11, I'll do it for you. It might be a little smarter to take $100 to 10 different locations though.

BTW...all you do is take the tickets to the store and they scan them. You don't have to check anything.

From my experiences working at a 7-11 in high school... there's NO WAY I or anyone I worked with would have scanned 200 tickets without knowing if there were any winners on them. You have to make sure you have enough money in the register to cover the small prizes (anything under $500 I believe). Most of the time, you're doing constant drops in the safe and you rarely have over a couple hundred in the registers. If, in those 200 tickets, there's a few tickets for a small sum of money each, you're not going to be able to pay the person out even though you're required to.

Manual checking is the only way, unless you get a dumb clerk.

In terms of the bringing 1K into 7-11, no big deal, the clerk will likely just drop the money in the safe right away.

This is one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't situations. It's not in your job description, but if you ***** about it or try to make money off of it, you'll probably get off but everyone will remember/know that you're not a "team player". Suck it up and figure out a way to pass it off to someone else in 6-12 months. In the meantime, do it with good cheer; as long as you're doing it, you might as well reap the goodwill from it.

Keep the money. Every week, hand out the same copy sheets to everyone and from time to time pay out $50 bucks or so. Screw the lazy bastard for not doing it himself.

LOL. Thanks for the replies guys. Have actually heard of several cases where the guy pocketed the $ and didnt even buy the ticket. In one instance, the office pool, actually hit the jackpot, needless to say he wasnt able to pay up.

This guy bought the ticket, but didnt want to share the winnings.

I WISH I had a decent amt of money to play the game with, the more you have to play with, (obviously) the better types of games you can play. I don't mind throwing a few of my own dollars at it, but I have a line I don't cross. But if I had OPM (other peoples' money), I would play more.

Anyone can PM me and I can give you some decent information, it may not guarantee you a winner, but you will really improve your odds, and it's not too difficult to understand.

$1,000+ pots. Wow, that's a lot of photocopies.

I used to do this occasionally. Always worried that if per chance my own personal ticket was the winner, how many lawsuits I would have from everyone. Not worth the hassle. Now taking a 'fee' and having the non-pooled winning ticket, and all your winning will be spent on lawyers!

Of course, I still haven't been hit by lightning yet....I really tried to, running around the top of Half Dome under dark skies! :)

Must be a fun workplace, where the boss is also looking for a quick out!! :)
