Interesting part of the statements today announcing Michael Schumacher's retirement "from racing" (read:not necessarily Ferrari), that at the end of the season Michael's future with Ferrari will be announced.

Hmmmm, replacement for Jean Todt? New position created for an eight time world champion? OK, seven time for now. Or will Michael simply be fishing on the pier on his lake in Switzerland, counting his money?

This could explain the way Ferrari has handled the retirement announcement. He did say that he made up his mind to retire right after Indy on July 2, so I don't think this was forced. This could also explain Michael's polite announcement during the interview.

I can not imagine that Michael will disappear after Brazil. Wishful thinking on my part?

    Any ideas?

Well he did say his future belonged to his family. I don't imagine he'll just fish off a pier but I don't think his involvement with Ferrari will be too involved for the next 2-5 years. I imagine he'll want to take a breather and then ease into another intensive role with Ferrari if that's both their wishes.

I agree. Plus, I don't think it would be easy for him to be around F1 that closely in a non-competitive nature. I'm sure they'll offer up some sort of "Senior Racing Consultant" title for him that may or may not mean anything. I don't really picture him getting back in any sort of managerial capacity. I think he's done.

Luca Montezemelo did say today that Michael will be at Ferrari in some capacity, "not behind a desk", but in some influential capacity.

    Actually 2010, when Kimi retires with three world championships through 2009, Michael will step in to win his 9th in 2010. :}

Now, he will be involved in a factory sport car program for the return of Ferrari at Le Mans in 2008 or 2009, with a brand new car (big evolution of the FXX)...

    I know, I'm dreaming..........

I read that Ferrari is sending Kimi to the NASCAR School Of Interview Techniques, so Kimi will learn to smile, mention all the sponsors, drink champagne, and speak clearly, all at once.

They'll probably throw some big title at him and keep him as a consultant, pretty much. He'll just oversee things to make sure they continue to win. It's a good move on F's part because sponsors will continue to feel confident that they'll be getting their money's worth. The role will be an adjustment for Michael because he'll no longer be "big cheese." I think he's smart enough to make the adjustment and if he doesn't like it he can fade away a bit.

    i know something better!

In one of the Police Academy movies, the Police Chief goes behind the podium and starts to speak to audience. What he doesn't know is that Mahoney brought in a stripper and hid her under the podium. There was the sound of the zipper ripping open and well the good lady went to work. The Chief's speech pattern automatically changed with him taking a lot of time between each word and enunciating with a lot of passion.

This might work for Kimi too. You heard it here first ;)

Some influential capacity could be more testing in the cars or, it could be diplomatic duty. You know, to keep the faithful purchasing overpriced product or at the very least doing so while being treated even worse than they currently are.

As to the original topic - what will Michael's future be? I hope he is the new Vice President Quality Control at the Ferrari road cars division. He will make sure we don't get F430s with poor fuel lines and other such issues. ;)

In seriousness, I think Ferrari may make him something like a brand ambassador for the company in the near future - going around the world meeting fans and participating in events such as the Ferraridays. Maybe a year or two later when Michael has had some time away from racing, they get him involved in the F1 team at a consulting level or a managerial level. Talent and dedication like his needs to be used and not let to become fallow.

Just think of what this retirement announcement will do for F and the sport as a whole? Should add another 15 - 20% to revenues. That's probably one reason they made the announcement when they did.

I am deeply saddend and think that he still had a few more good years in him, however, ending up like DC would be sad to see. I think he was inticed to retire, the body language on JT and Luca and the look on PLF face spoke volumes, plus when he leaned over and put his hand on Kimis shoulder that was also very telling....

I can understand why he would want to not burn any bridges at Ferrari. He was one if not the best ever!

Hi Impy - that would almost go hand in hand with my recent thread:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120784

    Makes sense.

Ferrari into LMP cars - wishful thinking on someone's part. Privateer teams already run the 430's in GT2 - ALMS, FIA-GT, LMS

    Bonjorno Ferraristi!

I'm glad Michael made his decision and announced it at Monza.
That shows respect to Italy, the Nation and the People.
He seemed at peace with his decision and he will live happily ever after.

    OR

He will become Ferrari's Commendatore of NASCAR!
Possibly one of the Korean or Chinese Automakers may want to start an F1 Team?

If his future position at Ferrari doesn't give him proper respect for his skills and Title, He'll go to one of the German Factory Teams, if the money is right. I've read that BMW made some outrageously high offer, $1 Billion long term? Michael started with Mercedes-Benz and may want to finish with them. Of course his contract with Ferrari may have limitations on this.

Michael Schumacher's Career as World Champion of F1, has come to a close, but we have not heard the last of Michael Schumacher, he is too great a MAN for that!

    Ciao...Paolo

MS wanted to wait with the decision to the end of the season to see whether he'd be champion or not. Montezemolo who thinks for the team (and not for one driver's personal career) forced him to make the decision by Monza. Has nothing to do with respect.

Mr 20% announced that MS will never be a team manager. That puts those rumours to rest. He also said MS will take a breather after the season before thinking about anything else. So forget the McLaren rumours as well.

Taking a one year hiatus would be mythcide. Look at the drivers who came back after a year's rest. Ouch.

What makes actually sense is to help in the development of new supercars. Adds to the mystique of the make.
