I am again hankering to trade my BB512i for a C4. I love driving and looking at my Boxer, but after 4 years I kinda want a change. I don't want to spend the cash to get a 275GTB or even a 330GTC for that matter...(man I should have never sold my 330GTC for $75k back in 1999)...but I THINK I want a classic front engine V12 again? With Boxer prices up a little, I figure I should be able to find a nice C4 that I can work out an even trade for...but, C4 values are up too? My wife thinks I'm crazy and should keep the Boxer...even my argument that the children could ride in the back doesn't faze her...what to do?

    BB is gorgeous.

Stick it in reverse and drive backwards a bit to get that engine-first disorder out of your system.

Ok, let's look at this from a detached and objective position. I know it's kind of hard when u got that sex machine of a Boxer over there purring away and ready to rocket u off to some automotive nirvana.

C4 production is what, like 5 cars? Not really, but it is more limited than later models. It's a front 12, pretty well developed as Ferrari V-12's go. Interior wise there's some comfort and maybe it has A/C, maybe it doesn't. Most collector articles cite the greatest potential for appreciation is on those last remaining lower priced front engined V-12's. That is the primary motivation. Forget what it does for u, driving experience wise. It's kind of, well, disappointing unless u only drive '70's cars.

Boxers [drool] are a bit more "common" and not as "hand built" as the C4's. Hey, most Boxers at least have all their parts in the same place. Front engined cars can be a pleasant treasure hunt. (Where the heck is that fuse block?!) The driving experience is, well, um, more viseral and seductive?

You know what? I can't do this any longer with a straight face. :) Keep the Boxer.

    Frank,

Keep the Boxer. The C4 is too civilized and too heavy. If you want the sound and a front engined V-12, get a 365 GT4 2+2 and keep the Boxer - same car (less looks, 1/3 the cost).

If you want a hairy beast, downgrade to a 365 BB or get a 330 America ;) .

    Regards,

    Art S.

I agree...but, I have still not really made up my mind...it is just something to ponder...I do have some feelers out for C4s and am waiting to see if anything nice comes up...I will be driving the old Fiat Boxer tomorrow so I will likely then decide to keep her a little longer...there is something about old Fiats that just makes me happy...

    Hi Frank......

Unlike a lot of other tifosi I love the look of the C4......there's nothing wrong with it at all.

    But a Boxer....well.....that is "the" car to have IMHO......I'd only buy a C4 if I couldn't afford a nice Boxer......and even then.....I'd probably buy a TR instead of a C4.

My BB512i is a Fiat just as my wife's Infiniti QX56 is a Nissan. For those of you who didn't take Business 101, a product of a subsidery company is by implication also a product of the parent company...FYI, you can also have your Chevy warranty honored at a GMC dealer...in any event, why do people take it as an insult to think of their Ferrari as a Fiat or 308GT4 as a Dino...no one seems to mind bragging that their Dino engine was designed by Ferrari or that their Maserati engine was made in the same plant as the Ferrari 360 engine...same deal...subsidery company products being designed or built or marketed by the parent company or vice versa... I kinda like calling my Boxer a Fiat...it sounds so ...

Dude, as quaint as it sounds, there is a huge difference between Ferrari/Fiat and Infiniti/Nissan or Chevy/GM, or even Lexus/Toyota and Audi/VW. In fact it should be Cadillac/GM as a better US example. Fiat owns Ferrari, but it is hardly a subsidiary as is the other premium lines to their owners. Nissn created Infinity as did Toyota to Lexus. Theothers were morphed in over time as the result of mergers and acquisitions. Ferrari was and independent company and runs more independently and self-sufficiently under Fiat than do the others. Well, it used to anyway. With Montezemolo at Fiat now, who knows how things shifted.

    Yes.

I cannot believe anyone that has driven both of these cars would prefer the C4, which is slow, unattractive (in a relative sense, at least) and hard to work on. If you don't like IF3Cs, wait until you have to pull off all those dcoes. Frankly, I prefer the Boxer even over a Daytona, despite what the market seems to think.

Is this thread a joke? There are other Ferraris, then there is a Boxer. End of discussion.

    Frank,

I'm with you on the Fiat thing. I thought of putting Fiat badges on my 330 but decided against it as my car predates the aquisition. If I ever get a BB or TR, I'd be very tempted to put Fiat badges on it. I'd be curious to see how may people, who don't know cars will turn up their noses because they think it's a Fiat :) .

I also agree with the follow your heart comment, but before you do, drive a few C4s to really see if you like them.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I have seen a lot of NSXs that the owner has replaced the Acura badges with Honda badges...looks kinda neat...I believe all NSXs in the ROW are badges as a Honda anyway...and, I have driven a C4 and liked it...but, I did look at my Boxer in the garage last night and remembered just how much I love her...I will keep her unless I find a C4 that I just can't pass up...

Since you previously owned a 400, I'm guessing you have a pretty good idea of what a C4 drives like.

Yes, I think you are crazy, but so what-- welcome to the club!

Incidentally, I think C4s are quite cool. Totally different from a Boxer, but very cool all the same. It comes down to how you want to use the car-- for long trips, I would think the C4 would be superior. For quick Starbucks runs, it's hard to beat the Boxer!

    get both

I'd think you would miss that adrenalin rush you get from a BB with its race car feel, the C4 would not be the same, sort of like comparing a early 911 vs a 928

The C4 is a really kewl looking car. I never got serious with one, but I always have had a desire for one. I looked at one in town, that was just a driver. My less than serious search began and ended at that point. (o/t please don't bring up about the nice 250PF Coupe forsale at 75K not long ago). I also understand the C4 is difficult to work on.

The Boxer is kinda stuck between the classic and the contemporary world of F cars. I feel the C4 is at the very tail end of the classic world. The last of the low production old school (for the most part) F cars.

I heard with the C4, that the 80/20 rule applies, when comparing it to the Daytona. The C4 is 80% of the performance of the Daytona, at 20% of the price. In addition to kewl looks, you get awesome sound and a real Ferrari for a little more than a new Z06. The only overhead for a C4, is the maintainance. It might even make a little bit of cash.

parker, dude, I hope u finally worked this out, this thought to trade the Boxer on a C4. Yesterday, Palos Verdes Concours D'Elegence in sunny southern CA. There was a red C4 in beautiful concours condition; nice car. Opposite there was a black/tan driver 512BB carb car in not nearly as nice show condition, although it showed well. Guess which one everyone was looking at? The C4 was lost among all the other front engined Ferraris - Daytona, 330's, 275's. The Boxer, on the other hand just had presence.

I have got to get me one of these!
