Can anyone tell me what a 308 should sound like without the air pump. Mine froze up while driving, fried the belt and at that moment the car sounded rough. Im thinking about installing a new air pump to see if this helps.

My '79 actually seems to run better w/o the air pump... What year is yours?

One of the first things you do with an early 308 is take the belt off of the air pump(s). The pump is run off the cam and if the pump seizes..... not pretty.

Actually the belts were never supposed to be very tight so all that would happen is for the belt to slip.
