360 and CS owners, any ticking noises from your engine?

My CS, with 6200 miles on the clock, has developed a ticking noise coming from the engine. Its very quiet when the engine is cold, but becomes much more noticeable when the engine is hot. A mechanic at my dealer has identified the issue as something in the intake manifold. He placed his finger in an area under the right side of the intake and the noise goes away.

Anyone had this noise and had it fixed under warranty or outside of warranty?

 

I know this is the obvious but did you check your oil level? My former 360 ticked when warm and I found it was a mere 1/2 quart low. Filled it up and all was well.

Good to see you up at Infineon a couple weekends ago.

I've definitely ruled out the low oil scenario. Oil has always been at correct level. Since the mechanic can make the sound go away by placing his magic finger under the intake, I know its something in the intake.

 

Bomb squad?

 

Check for either an exhaust leak and make sure the components of your exhaust system are securely screwed together.

Lucky for me, the ticking was due to two pieces needed to be tightly screwed back together again...allowed just enough air to escape to create a ticking noise similar to an exhaust leak.

 

Thanks, but I would like to reiterate that the sound is KNOWN to be coming from the intake manifold. It is not valves or exhaust related. I'm trying to find out if anyone has had this noise and had it repaired by a dealer.

 

Might want to remove the two air cleaner covers to ensure the filters are properly seated and to see if there is anything in there.

Or it could be some small item that came into the air intake that is on the filter loosely but which is tapping against the steel covers.

Are you sure she just makes a ticking noise?

 

Yes, the mechanic told me what it was... although I have forgotten the term. I know what the problem is... I'm trying to find out if others have had the dealer repair the issue under warranty.

Jimmy540i posted (I think it was in the socal section) something about a tapping sound from the rear in one of his two 360 modenas. I noticed he got banned but maybe he still has pm privileges? If not, I'm sure somebody knows how to get hold of him. I think he services his two modenas at FoOC and FoBH. Maybe you could call them and find out?

OK, I've located the source of the ticking sound (thanks, Rick). Here's a video clip with the ticking and a way to eliminate it.

If I reach down under the intake manifold, there is a piece of linkage. By pulling on the linkage about an inch or so, the sound goes away. It feels like throttle linkage, although obviously it isn't, since the throttle is electronic. Not sure what it is.

The point of this whole exercise is that FNA has apparently denied warranty repair of this problem. So, I'm trying to find out if others have had the problem and whether or not they've had it fixed under warranty. On the other hand, I may be the only one out there with this problem. Anyone?

The fuel injection throttle body is making the noise or the airflow mass metering is doing it?
Seems like there is not much to worry about....

I sent the linked file to a ferrari dealership service department, here is what the reply was:

"Tony:
It's complicated but I'll try my best. Under the plenum each cyl has two intake "runners". A short runner for high rpm,
long runner for low rpm. The lever you are pulling on swithes runners. The long runner feed from the opposite plenum.
Our mechanic thinks you might have a vacuum leak making the ticking noise. He says he's not sure without seeing the car
and you friends doing the same thing is very strange. We have tried to do the same, with a car here in our shop,
pulling on the lever did change the intake sound but we had no ticking outside normal cam chatter. I have saved your
movie and when the Ferrari ABM gets here I will see what he says.

Thanks for the info and taking the initiative. I'm interested to hear what they have to say. I seem to remember the mechanic saying that the runners or a related part "wear out" and that replacing them will solve the ticking issue, but eventually the part will "wear out" again and the ticking sound will return. I just can't bring myself to accept this explanation, and would prefer to learn how to fix the issue permanently and under warranty.

 

He wasn't much use or very informed.

It was a subject of much discussion when the cars first came out. The intake manifolding is more complex than you would think by looking at it. Each cylinder has 2 runners feeding it. One is open and the other has a valve, much like a throttle. Also there is a large valve between the 2 plenum chambers. All this is operated by a linkage system that is vacuum operated and exists for the purpoes of giving the car a very broad powerband.

The linkage rattles to varying degrees on different cars and is considered normal up to a point that is not defined but would be a judgement call.

I find it very surprising that any Ferrari dealer service department is not very well versed in the theory and operation of that system. His description was not correct.


It is not a very nice sound but it is normal.

Thanks for the informative post. Would it be safe to assume that the rattling becomes worse over time? My ticking/rattling has definitely increased during the past 4,000 miles. Also wondering why some 360s have the ticking and some don't if they all use the same part.

 

Hand built car. Not all the same, isn't that why we all love them so much?


If you really feel it is getting louder make sure you are not hearing an exhaust leak or lifter noise. 360's can make all 3 in various combinations and sound very similar. I have little to base it on but I feel as though the Shell oil allows more lifter noise but I have to admit a bias. I am a Redline fan.

 

We disconnected the end of the rod (ball joint, #8) and tested the linkage under the suction manifold. The linkage was fine. The lever that #8 connects to controls the ticking. Pull back on the lever and the ticking goes away. We then traced the hose that connects to the actuator (#16) and tested it for leaks. We did not find an vacuum leaks anywhere on the left side of the car. We then used a manual pump at the end of the hose and sound went away. Next we are going to remove the red plenum make sure nothing is bent or loose. It maybe a few weeks before we get to it though. Currently it is more of a puzzle rather than a big problem.
