Just wondering for those that have been on a computer for say 20 years or so, graduated college educated and been in the work force for say 20 years; do you find that your spelling is slipping?
Do you also find the practicality of a dictionary still a simple and great tool?
I've found using word doc. that my misspellings are increasing after handicapping for so long.

    Just me or....
    Is Microsoft dumbing us down?

    hav a grate day;)

i agree with you 100%, i used to be a spelling bee champ as kid. today i'm astounded at how much i've forgotten becouse the computers do it all for you. that and i never learned to type, so if i got close the word program filled inthe rest.

my penmenship (see;) ) has suffered as well. i spent 4yrs in school drafting letters and numbers and it's all for nought as we type everything now.

Everything Scott said I agree with 100%. My writing is so illegible it disgusts me, and I was in the spelling bee every year and won it once in grade school and now I have to look up some of the simplest words.

    Not at all.

If I don't know how to spell something, I look it up, either in an Internet dictionary, or in Microsoft's spell checker. I don't see how the spell checker is an excuse for bad spelling, unless you auto correct documents, but that creates further problems (errornous corrections).

Probably and worse for younger generations. It's similar to using a calculator all the time.

Yes for sure. Simple math is at risk too. I am in an accounting class right now and one topic was on accounting before computers and quick books and such. If doing things manually is almost stoneage now, I wonder how bad it will be in 50 years or so... everything will be automated.

Still spelling fine, but recently I took a couple of checks to deposit, and panicked when I got to the bank. I'd forgotten to total them on the calculator before I left the office! It took me the best part of a minute to remember that I learned how to do simple addition in grammar school....

I think that internet forums are making me dumber. So many people constantly misspell simple words, and when you see something spelled incorrectly repeatedly, you start to forget how it should be spelled.

The worst offender is the word DEFINITELY. I am appalled by how many people can't spell this simple word, especially for how often it appears on web forums.

Perhaps a "spelling thread" where people post the correct versions of words that are commonly misspelled would open some eyes?

i defanantly agree with you, tony. it's amazing, how 10 years ago i could spell just about everything correctly, and now, i sometimes stumble through easy words. there was a study done that said that internet words were becoming part of our dialogue, and that some students in their papers were using acronyms such as lol and imo in their papers. strange.

I don't use spell check for this exact reason. It makes me more careful and more aware of my mistakes. I've never used spell check :).

I've noticed lately that I tend to write "there" rather than "their". I whipped myself for that one! Thank God I don't write "your" rather than "you're", I couldn't live with myself if I did that!

But somehow, yes, typing on the puter constantly (I don't even have a pen on my desk!) is hard on the spelling. I need to pay attention. And I never use the spell check feature ...

I'm more than a bit dyslexic, and I found that spell check actually improved my spelling. By spell check, I mean the little dialog box that has choices with which to replace the mispelled word and access to a dictionary. Repeatedly seeing the correct spelling for various embarassingly simple words that I chronically mispelled in high school and college has greatly improved my spellin'. I don't like autocorrect because of the aforementioned problem of autocorrect "correcting" your mispelled words so that the word is correctly spelled but changed to a different word.
I can't say that I'm a fan of the text-messaging/1ee7 (?) styles of abbreviation, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist with respect to any technologies that don't play a role in keeping my precious self tender, pink and out of the grave. However, I'm utterly mystified by the shrill corrections meted out on forums and blogs. A gentle reminder about similar words with different meanings might be helpful to a fellow chatter, especially if they are writing in a second or third language, but who cares if there are a few type-os in a post or informal e-mail that someone banged out during a two minute break from work. I'd be surprised if there aren't any spelling errors in this post, but I'd be astounded if the spelling errors obscured the message.

I've all ways been a good speller. I sucked in spelling bees because I can't spell by ear, I need to see it written down.

I never run spell check, I just write it, look it over and send it.

Spelling has always been important to me. I like the language and I like using it correctly (and spelling everything correctly). Microsoft Word more often has a problem with my grammar than my spelling. With that said, there are still a few words I don't spell correctly and Word corrects them for me. I would just as soon prefer they put a red line under them so I know they're wrong and can correct them manually.

Seeing others spelling mistakes hasn't bothered me too much (my last post was a joke Rolls...). As long as the idea has been transmitted and I understand it, I'm fine with it.

My favorite is one of Doody's quotes that I saved. The title to a 997TT thread was wrong. "Their here" instead of "They're here" and Doody was making a joke about it.

    lol!

huked on foniks rely werked for me...i feel that students today, myself included, are dependant on technology...i.e. word/spellcheck and calculators. i was listening to the radio one day and they were interviewing the person that holds the world record for doing the most multiplications in his head, (2,4,8,16,32,64,128...etc.) and he was saying how he is very upset at how schools today are using calculators to teach math...i don't know about you guys, but i can do the math needed for business, but when it comes to algebra, you could give me the answers to the tests and i'd still fail...

THis is how anything I try to read at a glance looks, but a few of the letters would also be upside down. It provides some amusement when I'm driving down the road and see a billboard for a "Furniture Whorehouse"
