"There was no trouble whatsoever," Williams said. "They were all cooperative."

Yeah, they offered the trooper a spliff and a ho-ho ;)

Interesting. They were probably tipped off. N.O.'s serious crime is through the roof, but a bust like this is high profile and makes them look like they're doing something.

Damn! - to be 73 and still sucking down weed and mushrooms.

The world is a safer place now don't ya think?

Since the arrest was far from New Orleans I don't see any connection to the current crime in the city. The crime is not from people like Willie. Unless Willie sells crack on the corner of the projects....

Serious crime is going up all over the country and the cops are busting pot smokers. Someone help me understand this...

I want to know how Kinky feels about Willie Nelson's recent bust? Enquiring Texans & Friedman supporters would like to know.
I have a feeling that this will do some serious damage to his campain.

By that rationale we shouldn't worry about any lesser crime so long as a greater crime goes unsolved. So stealing cars, coming to the scene of traffic accidents, having your house broken into, having your girlfriend beat up by some drunk guy, having your retirement stolen by a con man, being ripped off for $10k by a sheyster all will be unprosecuted while there's murders and rapes out there.

Willie is stupid IMO. He knows the score, he just don't care. That's cool - he knows he's breaking the law and don't care - so just toss him in jail for a couple of years or sieze his assets and make him broke, maybe then he'll get it or leave the country.

The local news reported that he could get six months in jail, but he is Willie Nelson & did admit that it was his & the groups & there was no intention to distribute. If it was any other person, they would be SOL. A pound & a half in Texas is serious jail time, I’m not sure how Louisiana is with their drug laws but I did hear of someone I knew long ago that was recently busted for 23 kg of ________ with the intent to distribute, in other words hello Louisiana prison time. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out.

Slap on the wrist and get ready for the Willie N. benefit concert. Meanwhile he'll sell a few more albums ;)

Uh, where ya been ? The IRS pretty much took everything he had, why do you think he's still out touring ? Because the IRS wants MORE.

Problem here is it's 1.5 pounds. A precedent may be set. If he 'gets off', then EVERONE busted for 1.5 lbs should get off also, and Willie has the past history to go with it. If Willie wants to smoke, he should do it the same way McCartney does - in a gated palace.

Unlike everything else you mention, pot smoking is victimless. That's the difference and the rationale. A little too subtle and nuanced for ya'? Jail time & seize his assets? Why not flogging? Sheesh!

A month ago in a one page "10 questions for Wille" in Newsweek he made reference to pot twice. Accused his wife of being into his Maui Waui when she wanted to promote biodiesel. Said he had changed his mind on legalisation because the government would just muck it up. I think Newsweek is pretty widely read.

    Why is weed illegal again?

Next thing the cops will be confiscating freshly filled lawnmower bags and arresting the owners for possession with intent to distribute.

Interesting how New Orleans' "through the roof" crime is common knowledge all the way over in "The O.C." ;)

And for the record, he was busted on I-10 OUTSIDE of Lafayette. That's 130 + miles from the "through the roof" crime ridden city of New Orleans. And also, the stretch of I-10 from Tx to Fla is a MAJOR drug traffic highway. Second only maybe to I-95. LASP has task force units that all they do is bust drug runners. So there was probably no tip off, either. (Other than the fact that it was Weedy Nelson's tour bus!):D

However you want to "sugarcoat it", violent crime stats are way up there. People want to down play it because they want the tourists back. But, where are they? Sadly, the place will probably never recover.

You don't think for a minute the cops didn't know who they were pulling over and that they'd be in for finding a stash? Chalk one up for the "war on drugs" :)

Sugarcoating what? You stated that "New Orleans serious crime is through the roof". And that "a bust like this is high profile and makes them look like they're doing something." But you have no response to the fact that the incident happened 130 miles away in ANOTHER city. That's like me saying "Laguna Beach crime is through the roof!" When Santa Barbara cops bust Willy Nelson "to make it look like they are doing something!" Is the geography clearer now?

Any facts to back up the "through the roof" comment? Besides CNN/MSNBC/FNC? Have you even been here in the last year? Ever? Doubtful! You hear about crime here, I'm sure. Why? Because it's sensational! I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the majority of Americans still think we're treading water down here and living like Mad Max/Road Warrior! Do I hear about crime in LA? NO! Why? Because just like every other city, crime happens. Don henley certainly got it right:

"...People love it when you lose,
    They love dirty laundry..."

No tourists? Sure. Just flip on the news. Anything about New Orleans NOT talking about crime, murder,Nat'l Guard patrols, etc? Didn't think so. Anyway, thanks for the well wishes for us "coming back". I'll be sure to send the same when the "Big One" hits and the OC is sliding halfway to Hawaii. :)

Uh, guys, there is a song titled, "Weed With Willie", it probably shouldn't come as a surpise to anyone that he got busted with pot. That's like the headlines reading "Cyprus Hill Busted with Marajuanna" or "Snoop Dogg Caught in Pot Sting". It's part of their lifestyle and they seem pretty strong about their stance. I think that Willie will take whatever punishment is given and keep right on rolling...if you know what I mean. There will probably even be a benefit concert in it.

Yeah, but that wasn't for smoking pot - Willie had other issues. If we know the law and choose to break it anyway, then we deserve whatever we get from it. No sympathy for Willie. He could choose to live numerous places where it's legal, but here it's illegal, and if you play you pay
