A few more pics... The original paint colour Marrone Metallic is actually quite nice, better than red in my opinion! Al Cowan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Even more of a mess now.... got the floor out yesterday and came across this, all the coolant pipes are out of the car now, the front and back end are pretty bare. A complete new front end is available but pretty pricey! Need to change some chassis parts now I think, another job on the list. The last pic came from the boot.... alasdair, if you need any spare tubing we've just scraped 3 mondials but have retained some of the chassis tubing
Al, that car is a mess, the greatest problem is all that bl**dy fibreglass insulation acts as a frigging sponge and coupled with British salt/weather the poor car had no chance over here. just look at what Omgjon started with, it was like a new car compared to this. If you can conjure up a car as nice as his at the end result then i personally will send you an OBE ( i suppose you can you get them on E-Bay?) All the best Graham. P.S. any thoughts yet on what to substitute the fibreglass with on rebuilding
I wish you luck with this one. IMHO, regrettably, I wouldn't waste the money or time on this particular one. its almost fit for the scrapyard. As the previous post look at Jon's resto in USA and this guy has deep pockets. I have too but short arms.. LOL
Recently saw a GTS that was at least as bad as this. The tubing had rusted so badly that if you took the roof out, the car would sag in the middle. When they went to work on it, htey fasioned a reinforced cage in the body to keep it's shape while they cut the oval tubing out. Press on, if the owner wants the car badly enough, the money spent will be forgotten soon enough. DM
Sharp eyes! I never thought of looking into the sweep up, I han=e made a note to do that as I progress on mine.
ROTFLMAO! Scotch/Irish....I pick up the loose bits, nuts and bolts and stock them back into the work bench bins.......
What did the original tool kit spanners have written on the side, there is a rusty set down the side of the boot! The car is certainly a challenge, it needs a new front end and some other plating but is not too far gone. The rest of the chassis is solid. Graham, I will just be redoing the cuts I had to make and use standard fibregloass for it Al Cowan
One spanner had "Sircodin" written on it, the others just had the size numbers. Preserve that patina...
Hi Graham, I don't know yet, I have to sit down this weekend and try and price the job for the guy to see if it is economical for me to do it, hope so, I like a challenge! Al
I have started to remove the panels of the car to get in to repair some of the damage before it gets dipped. I removed the panel behind the drivers head to find more sound deading material and a holey fuel breather pipe! I then drilled all the spot welds out of the panel holding the 3 release levers as this was pretty crusty all the way round. They should be easy enough to remake as there are no complex shapes, just a 90 degree bend and some curved edges! I also fancied a look at the front end framing so 6 minutes later, the front was off from just behind the headlights. I went for the points of rot as the area around the front of the headlights and the indicator lens is still very strong and not rusty at all. Someone may need it at some point if they ding the front end on a bollard or something! I also started to remove paint on the back wheel arch to find not much metal underneath, Someone had bodged it up by welding in a plate and then filling over it. It was starnge to see 1/4 inch of lead all the way along the top of the metal behind the drivers door. Even the bit where the side window sits in is made of lead! Scott Bonowski of "Hot Rods & Hobbies" has restored 6 Dinos in the last five+ years http://www.hotrodsandhobbies.net/Prenovitz/Prenovitz%20pic%20gallery/dppic1.htm and commented to me that he has seen an amazing amount of lead work where the flying buttress meets the rear quarter panel (just below the triple vents). He believes it to be factory original to cover up fast (aka sloppy) welds. PS - 5 of those cars have been shown at concoours and won Platinums (at least)
Dave, This pile of rust that you saw didn't happen to be at Delphais in Exton by any chance? Sounds like what I saw when Mike was doing some warranty work on my car in April-May. Whew! What a mess! Bill
Hi all, cut the rest of the wings off yesterday and took 2 hours to wrestle the front bulkhead fibreglass section out. What a pain to remove. Chopped of the 2 top corners and then had to take a sliver out where the steering column is. I hope it goes in easier. The bottom chassis tubes seem to be in good condition which was nice to find, good news for once. Next job is suspension off, engine out and more grinding and cutting disks! Got a match from s ample card for the paint, looks even better than the original panel, time to convince the owner now for the colour! Al Cowan
Aloha.....boy am I glad my 206 GT has an alloy body.....my heart goes out to you........hang in there......Gregg
Clearly you have a huge job to do. The rusted frame rails are a tough break...I am interested in how this goes. I recently bought an early '71 or so euro coupe that had the seats done exactly as yours are. I thought it was a sad waste as the workmanship was top shelf but I don't ever recall seeing seats done like this. I see that yours are exactly the same with those big grommets down the middle. Is there any chance that these seats are accurate?? Thanks
