My favorite Grand Prix track simply because Ive been there and ridden around the Nordschleife, which by the way means "North Loop" in a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, which was the greatest experience of my life. I know the two tracks used to be connected back in the glory days...I just dont know where. I know they also connect the two for the Nurburgring 24 Hours, but I just cant see where or how they do that. While Im at it, anyone have any good stories about being at the track? Maybe you went to this year's, or another's, F1 race. Camped out in the middle of the Nordschleife for a day to watch people drive around? Driven on it yourself? Im also open to history lessons. I want to learn as much as I can about the Nurburgring and Monza.

Yep. I found out when I was there that they used the old 'Ring. If you read the latest issue of Road and Track, Patrick Hong drove in it in a Maserati Trofeo car. Lucky son of a gun.

It is open to the public yes, but they do still race there I believe because, well its such an amazing track. When they cannot the whole Nurburgring, its a 23 mile track with about 200 curves. That is really something. In 1 hour, you can only complete about 5 laps. There are also, and I just learned this, 200 cars in the 24 Hour race. 200!! Think about that. Also, for the whole race, you can buy your ticket and go anywhere, absolutely anywhere, you want to watch it. Maybe you want to camp out at Kesselchen, cook some food, watch the cars take that great sweeper, and take a bunch of pictures from behind the barrier.

Then maybe for some reason, you got tired of it. Well then, should you please, you could go all the way down to the Coca Cola Kurve, on the South End. That is so awesome. I think you get my point. Also, you asked why they race there if the safety standards arent up to scratch? The safety standards arent up to scratch for the F1 cars. These sports cars are much slower, therefore the whole Ring is perfect for them. A paradise. The highest speed is only 160mph, which by the way is how fast I went, but its all about the corners. Perfect, just perfect.

I advise you to download rFactor --> buy a wheel --> race on the nordscliefe on your computer - damn it's good fun! I've done well over 100 laps and I can't get enough! Heaps of cars available for download aswell. From what i've heard the track is almost identical to the real thing.

The 'old' ring is still intenselly used for motorsports. They have an endurance championship running over several months with 4 & 6 hours events for GT & Touring cars, with a huge field. Also the 24 hours of the Nurburgring.

The 'old' Nurburg is one of the most spectator-friendly track I know, and most events have huge attendance, with the public able to drive on the road outside the perimeter, and watch cars from different locations during a race.

I can see that it isn't to GP or sportscars standards, but it's still very safe, with guardrails all round, emergency services, good marshalling, etc...
The reasons it was dropped from the GP calendar at the time was because of the length of the circuit, making it difficult to reach an accident or evacuate casualties (imagine a circuit 10 times the length of Road Atlanta). It's a GREAT track.

One of the best places on earth ! I spent a week every summer with th BMW club in the 80's (we had the two tracks exclusively after 84). In 84 I took my wife's new 928S straight from Stuggart to the Ring. In 85, I took my 288 for a few laps; in 86 my euro M6. Ever since then, I try to go there every time I am in europe on business. I once took a rental Volvo and screwed up the motor on the second lap. We limped back to the rental company and almost forgot the Ring receipts in the glove box !. I still drive it on PS2 as much as I can until I go back. Hans Stuck took me around in an M5 and Marc (F1) Surer in a 911TT.

The Nurburgring is only 80 miles from my home. At least i am there one Sunday per month at the Nordschleife and i am always there for F1GP,DTM, Oldtimer Grand Prix and so far. It's always nice to see other carmaniacs over there. I often watch at the other drivers from different locations around the track.

Indeed you are a lucky man. I would be there for all of those events, and much more. I would go at least twice every week, if not to just sit in the parking lot where the cars and gearheads gather to watch the machinery come and go. And make friends.
