I am selling a sleeper sofa on Criagslist (CL). It is $750 OBO. I get an email saying is it available, I say yes. He says he wants it, send him my address or po box, name and phone number. He will send me a check. He lives in Florida and said after the check clears he will have his movers get it.

It seems very scammy, but said he will get it after the check clears. I mean wouldn't you want to look at the couch??? Is he going to send his "movers" here and rob me?

How can I make sure this isn't a scam?

    1. Don't provide a home address.
    2. Meet the movers in a public place and with at least 1 other person.
    3. Don't know about you, but unless I know the person VERY well I no longer accept cashier's checks or regular checks for anything. It's simply too easy to fake it and banks are not vigilant about catching fakes right away so the onus is on you. I'd say wire transfer only, besides it's easier for both parties.

What I can't get over is why a guy would want to buy a $750 couch that's out of his town and have it moved? Is it antique? Just doesn't add up to me.

Yup, it's a scam. Take face-to-face cash transactions only on craiglist. Remember, don't sound desperate on craigslist or else you will never sell it, people will just try to get you to go lower in price. Lie a little bit, a $1,200 couch now becomes a $2,000 couch, you just got a new one, and the first person with $750 gets it. The price is non-negotable. Make it sound as-if they are getting a great deal, make the description of the couch seem heavenly.

F that, I only do face to face transaction on CL.

If you want whatever i'm selling, come and get it. Cash only. I thought this was a standard thing. I've bought tickets in the $150+range and sold things over that price as well.
