The Ferrair dealer says I need new rear shocks on my '96 F355 Spider. The car has 36,000 miles. The sensor light stays on but the car handles great. Is it most likely the sensors on the shocks and not the whole shocks? What does it take to fix my problem?

Before you replace the shocks try removing the shock actuators and make sure they aren't simply stuck. The actuators on my car get stuck about every 5-6 months and the suspension light comes on. I take the actuators off, clean them up, blow a little air in them to make sure there isn't any dust buildup, apply a little lube and pop them back on. The light goes out shortly thereafter and I'm good for another 5-6 months.

It's pretty easy. All you do is pop off the retainer clip to remove them. Then reinstall the clip and pop the actuator back on. The light won't go off right away. You need to drive it a little before it will reset but the light will usually go off after 10 miles or less.

    Hope this helps.

Also the gear in the actuator can break...new ones are available from Daniel @ Ricambi America! He's the only one that has them, as FNA does not sell the individual part, only the complete actuator.

BTW, if your speedo sender is broken or disconnected, that will also set off the suspension light.

I like that idea...since most owners put very little miles on their cars. It would make sense that things not excersized would get stuck. That happened to my exhaust bypass-valve solenoid...it just needed some WD40 an some air blown through the valve. Works great now :).

You may not really need new shocks, do you see any weaping of fluid out the top? Or inside behind the wheel? I know I need new shocks as my car does not "feel" right and I the top of the shock has a bit of black ooze from the fluid.
