I'm considering getting the Ferrari Acer notebook. I would be using it for personal use, ie, wifi surfing the net, using MS Word & Excel ... nothing too complicated.

Any thoughts on which model to buy and from whom to buy it? Experiences positive or negative?

    TIA!

Awesome notebooks, Dusty here @ MVP has one that he uses for personal use. Great for anything minus first person shooters. We usually have some in stock here so if you decide to buy don't hesitate to contact me.

I bought the ACER 4000 and it is great for the purposes you mention.

However, the screensavers ran out in August and no-one seems to have any new ones except for 3000 on www.Ferrariworld.com.

Get a thinkpad. They make the "Ferrari" of laptops in my humble opinion. After selling/repairing computers for 20 years, I think the IBM think pad is the top of the line when it comes to Laptops.

Its whats inside that counts and if you like you can stick all kinds of ferrari logos, stickers, or even emblems on the ThinkPad then you'll realy have an exotic looking laptop. Yea?

I hate Acer Computers. I had one before and the HD died. Defective. Never gone near one ever since. Maybe they're better in quality now, but I just see it as a gimmicky Licensing ploy.

It depends on the build date, but all the newer ones only have the existing manifold issue. The I-N-T-E-R-I-O-R buttons tend to get sticky if left out in the sun and the wireless mouse has issues with the F1 pump. Just make sure to change the belts on time and it should be okay for daily usage.

There is a possibility of a distinct aroma of gas in the area after extended usage!

So, there is a leak somewhere!

ACER don't make hard-drives. If it failed you need to blame Seagate, IBM, Hitachi or whomever made the hard drive for ACER. Some hard drives will last 10 years even if abused regularly, some will last 3 days when nutured and cared for tenderly ....

Yes, but they choose the brand of components that go into the computer. In this particular case it was a Maxtor HD, which are notorious for being pieces of junk. It died after only a year. Found out the hard way how much they suck.

Which is why I'm happy with this one that I built myself. Still tempted to get the Ferrari Monitor though :D I also might look into seeing if I could just buy the Ferrari case seperately from Acer and use my own components.

That is a blanket statement. While certain HD models might be dogs, it's only known *after* that model has been out for a signifcant amount of time (typically longer than that model is produced). Maxtor produce, and have produced some outstandingly reliable drives. They have, like ALL HD manufacturers, produced their share of dogs too. When a manufacturer chooses an HD to go into a particular piece of equipment, there is no way to know whether that model HD is going to be a reliable drive or not, and therefore you cannot with impunity point to the manufacturer and state categorically that you've identified the problem.

One anecdotal incident does not a trend make....

I'm not techie - I shop price , plain and simple. I retired a year ago from a prominent high tech company and was looking for bang for the buck... My Acer laptop has been faithful for a year now at one half the cost of the name brands - no I didn't go for the $2k premium for the logo and the carbon fiber. Maybe I just got one of the good ones. Pure dumb luck - same way with my Ferrari.

I'm actually reading and responding on a Acer Ferrari 4000. Fast machine (AMD 64), excellent graphics, and Windows Vista support (as future proof as possible for a laptop). In fact, I'm running Vista on my machine and it runs great!

Acer doesn't make hard drives... it was probably a Seagate or a Quantum or a Maxtor or other major brand... can't blame the integrator (Acer) for that! It happens...

Those are good examples of first-person shooters.

"first person" means first-person's perspective, ie "you" see what your character sees -- you rotate left to see what's left, look up/down etc. It's the most "immersive" type of game, and also the most demanding of a computer system's hardware, but most especially of a computer's video card. In a modern computer system, a video-card is really an immense computer in it's own right have many millions of times more computing ability that the whole of NASA had to launch the first manned space missions. Because of this, they have high current and cooling requirements -- traits wholly unwelcome in a portable computing device. So, for portable computing, these devices are substantially dumbed down (eg having no memory of their own, but parasitically stealing memory from the host), and the "core clock" being slowed down to use less current and generate less heat. These compromises impact very negatively on the card's ability to generate high-quality images fast enough for first-person games. Enthusiasts of these types of games obsess over its "frame rate" or "FPS" that a given computer system is capable of achieving over another. They'll typically choose their computer system based on its FPS, over everything else.

From the "boring but true" computer-history files:
The modern 1st-person shooter was defined by a particularly gifted developer, and mad-Ferrari enthusiast, John Carmack with his game Wolfenstein 3d.

Tell that to everybody else I know that has gone near one. I have no problem condemning a HD manufacturer due to a bad experience, coupled with others. They aren't people, it's alright to do so. I know it's always typical of hardware geeks to argue which is better etc, I'm just saying my experience.

I'm sure they're not all like that, but again, HDs, not people we're talkin about :D

Basically as fiorano explained, just computer games that are first person shooters. Quake, Counter-Strike, etc are examples of this. Not something the majority on here do, but I am just throwing it out there.
