Actually, he was consistently faster the first 10-15 laps. All of the Michelin runners were. Then the Bridgestones started coming to life and Michael started working his way up the field, passing both Hondas and Kimi along the way. He was already into Fisi before they pitted and Alonso's 25-sec lead dropped to about nine. His tire change exacerbated the problem as he couldn't heat up those fronts, but the race was getting interesting before that point.

It looked like world domination in qualifying, but the Bridgestones were up to the task once the race started.

Exactly. MS/Ferrari treated yesterday's race like a marathon;paced themselves early and took a well deserved victory-although Fisi did come awfully close to taking him out...Alonso went too fast too early and came up short. He had to be gifted second place by Fisi....Alonzo is a great driver but has nowhere near the intelligence of MS (although that may come with age).

    IMO, Absolutely not!!

MS passed Alonso on the track and the only reason FA was gaining ground on MS in the closing laps, is that it seemed MS was intentionally slowing, from the looks of the live timing.

During the after-race press conference, MS said that he turned down the revs for the last few laps. You will find the exact quote on f1.com.

I wonder if a bunch of Ferrari fans are on Renault forums right now bashing Fisi for letting Alonzo get by him for 2nd place? (Just kidding, I do not give a crap about other forums.) I have to admit when Impy wrote Ferrari 1,2 I figured he hit the bottle a little early after qualifying. He is a real Ferrari Fanatic and he was half right!

In the UK the silly prats running the TV cameras desided to put in the adverts when MS was getting out of the car, and cut camera shot when MS was about to do his victory jump:( Also the after race interview was not screened:( The silly prats, they havnt a clue. Was it the same in the US?? Or did you see it all?

I think the camera panned away just as he was about to jump. I saw the first part of the english interview. I can upload it somewhere if it is not on youtube already. MS was very happy. FA looked like he was going to explode, but his answers were to the point and controlled.

    edit:
Lucky for me I have a tivo at work with all the races. I just watched the podium. Speed TV panned away just as he was about to jump before the anthems. He gave a little jump when he was handed the trophy. MS did not spray FA or Fisi, he only sprayed Chris Darr (SP?)

The annoucers said common Fernando show a little bit of smile :)

Anthony Rowlinson is a good guy - so I dont have any beef against him. Its about questions like these. For the last couple years, there is always a journo (particularly from the UK) at each race who asks Michael " So when are you going to retire?".

Now that he is actually retiring, I would say leave Michael in peace - you got what you wanted. Instead they seem to be changing their mind - they want him to stay. Feckless idiots!

There is one stupid journo who is guilty of constantly needling Schumi - I can't recall his name but I remember Ron Dennis forced him to do a lap of Silverstone naked after he proudly proclaimed that McLaren will not win a race that year.

MS reminds me of Michael Jordan: both are fiercely competitive, they've both dominated their respective sports for almost a decade (even through the inevitable deterioration caused by age), both, even though having accomplished every conceivable goal in their sports, continue to perform as if they have everything to prove, and both play each game as if it was their last. That commands respect.

FA should have made the first move since he walked away as soon as his car was parked after the race. Usually the podium finishers congratulate each other.

Also did you notice that they did not spray MS. Fisi started to, but quickly followed FA's lead. Seems like team orders (petty jealousy!) :)

Uh, No. There's no way he was catching Michael without that wheel nut incident, let alone passing Michael if he caught him.

Then you have to take into consideration that making a pass on Giancarlo would have had to at least look real considering at that stage any team orders would have been taken more seriously than the ones [Renault] issued later in the race.

People have been doubting Schumi from the beginning of this season, I remember very well so many thought he had no chance hell. I hope he proves them all wrong, it's certainly within his grasp. Alonso is such a rotten "sport" and crybaby and I would love to see him rewarded with one or two more final insults before what will probably be a less successful season with McLaren next year. :D

Ferrari and Michael can do absolutely amazing things when they focus, and you know now more than ever they are HIGHLY focused on winning!

    Amen to that.

i think FA's a great driver, nonetheless. i rate him higher than Kimi. but it's small issues like this that makes him look like a boy whose trapped in a man's body. this is the 1st time in so long since i've seen the 1st runner up of the race not congratulating the winner.

how can a world champion behave like that? such an embaressment to the sport.

edit: i woke up this morning, and read in my local daily. this is one of the headlines :

    ALONSO: RENAULT NOT HELPING ME

hehe...it seems, FA claims that the renault team were helping GF, and focusing on the manufacturer's title rather the WDC. he said that most of the team members were happy that renault took back the lead in the Cons. championship. he also claimed no one was bothered that he had lost the lead in the WDC. he said that certain member of the team's not helping him because if they do, he's taking the number 1 to mac next yr.

Mr. Alonso, as far as i'm concern, ur bound to lose the championship with all this silly thoughts and comments. such a crybaby when things don't go your way. accept defeat like a man and move on. it's not the team's fault that u pushed the car too hard and worned the tyres out. as much as u hate it, Michael will be crowned this year's world champion.

Damn wicked race! Pure brilliance by schumey. Felt sorry for Heidfeld at the end, he deserved points for his good racing. And I think it was during his pit that one of the wheel-changers got smacked by his car, and after he completed the tyre change he cringed onto the ground in pain.

edit. The NH pit moment I mentioned is at 1 minute mark in that part 2 compilation - http://youtube.com/watch?v=fYNWWUn7VjY

I still don't understand why FA slowed down so dramatically - perhaps the dark hand of Bernie pulling some strings? The Show is all-important.

It is blamed on new front inters but the conditions clearly suited them. He was 25 sec in front and looking like certain victory - then massive slow down for long enough to get Fisi and MS in front of him, then back up to speed and knocking off fastest laps. During the race it was lamely explained as FA "conserving" his tires for later in the race. Sure did not seem like tire problems - even SpeedTV was guessing something other than tires like a missing gear.

Having the Championship tied is Bernie's wet dream - especially combined with the buzz of MS wanting/fighting to retire on top. This type of "Team Order" could explain why FA was so pissed/sullen at race end.

Even so, it must be said... MS's pass on FA was a wonder to behold.
