Are you serious, that blows! There's no way I would be able to make it to the last two. I was hoping to go within the next few years but not so soon :(

I, for one, think this is a really cool idea.

Mind you, driving up and down PCH from Newport Coast Dr to Laguna Beach AT the speed limit, but in second gear, for three weeks beginning October 21, starting at say, 6am to about 6:30am, sounds like a cool idea too. (Recommend anyone not driving CARB/SMOG compliant vehicles avoid this one though.) On week four, we approach the homeowners and say, "how about we let byegones be byegones and go back to the way it was?"

Given that the cars would be CAVC compliant as regards smog equipment and we'd be obeying all traffic laws, there's not a damned thing anyone could do about it until they decide to put up "no cruising" signs, when we'd be reduced to driving by only once rather than flipping u-turns at each end.

(Then again, maybe I'm still somewhere between stage 3 and 4.)

Seriously though, CDM's idea bears further thought...

...you buy a house behind a California highway and then wonder why you have road noise in the bedroom...
Not much different than buying a house on the flightpath and complaining about jet noi...oh yeah, nevermind.

and very costly for the city to keep up with that battle, dont know about you but its more of a nuesance to get a fix it ticket then it is a hardship on the bank account, just playing devils advocate here but where it would cost me $15 to write off a ticket it would cost the city thousands of dollars just to employ those cops to give me the ticket, doesnt make much sense and the balance is very off and not in their favor and in the long run (if the law doesnt change) they would lose that battle. Yes I realize that they already pay the cops to work but this would be extra in needing a special unit just to patrol that area and not neglect the rest of the duties that need to be seen to.

I love that idea, I was just gonna suggest it myself. In fact I think this is much better than seeing a bunch of killer cars parked, it was so much more fun watching them all in motion the first week they didnt allow anyone in until 7am and no lineup on PCH.

But as for them not being able to do anything they cant do anything about you going in and parking and getting a coffee at Starbucks and hanging out anyways. I use to skateboard all the time, believe me I know this. They would need to go to the length of Trespassing each and every single person that they dont want there, this not only would be costly but annoying to them as well since they would need law enforcement there but also a legal representative for the owner of the property for each and every case.

Solely for those who wish to voice their opinions directly. I do not want people to be irresponsible, potentially making things worse for alternate venues. Use wisely...

Actually, it looks like the better contact would be the one from the press release - Bill Rams of the Irvine Company - 949-720-2675.

    Here's my letter to Bill:

    Bill,

I’ve been attending the show since shortly after it began and was startled to read that it would soon be ending. I realize that there have been complaints but this can’t be the whole story. PCH which creates noise 24/7 is far worse than what the car show is emitting. Lately with the police presence the event has been very tame. If this is just a liability thing then is there not some kind of a compromise solution?

The car show has put Crystal Cove Promenade on the map, worldwide. It has brought hundreds of thousands of dollars in business to the shops there too. I know that the Irvine Co. probably disputes this but it is true. You could also argue that advertising doesn’t bring additional business either, because it too is hard to measure.

In closing, Crystal Cove has brought a tremendous value to the community in more ways than you would ever realize and The Irvine Company has been able to benefit from this. So, to just dismiss the event for whatever reason, I believe is short sighted and not being a good community partner. I know many other people who shop there that feel the same way and who would probably shop somewhere else if things stop. Please rethink this decision and allow the “greatest impromptu car show on earth” to continue.

    Regards,

    Scott

Very well said! This is a community based event. I see a few Newport Beach Police officers and city employees strolling and enjoying the cars. And since the new rules went into effect with the increased police presence, the show has become very tame...but the business for the shops is still there. I call on the Irvine company to reach a compromise with the community and let the show go on!

That attitude is what has caused the situation.

You need to convince them you are a positive not a negative to the area.

After 10/14, visit CC but don't back in. Afterall, no one displays for a car show nose-in!

I have space to host at my building, but it is in City of Industry (60 and 605). Starbucks is 1.5 miles away, but In/Out is close by...I have space for about 100 cars or so, maybe more. We are open on Saturdays, so bathrooms would be available. We do have to be careful of my customers' delivery vehicles coming in and out of one driveway. Incredible view of...nothing.

    Bill responded:

    Hi Scott,

Thank you for your email. I thought you might like to see the press release we issued yesterday. It explains how the show's size, growing complexity and commercialism led us to the decision... I have forwarded your email to others in the company.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

The incredible thing is that they mention the commercialism. They can absolutely put a stop to that, by having the RACs do something other than give 20 minute parking tickets and blocking the exit to PCH (which probably is a fire code violation as well). Our current crew out there hasn't even attempted to stop this - and in fact, has even given them illegal parking (again, that limo last week that was also blasting the stereo). Seems to me that this could have been solved by trying to implement some rational rules instead...

And if this is what it was all about, then why the F did they make these changes to the start time and procedure? It doesn't help any of those issues...

There are lots of things that can be done to make statement to the Irvine Company. We all have second cars that we could park in the parking stalls at 8:30 a.m. and leave them there for the entire day preventing any patrons from being able to park. Do this for a few Saturdays and we will certainly get their attention. But what will we accomplish? They don’t want us!

The issue here is that we absolutely have something unique that needs to be preserved. It is a passion for many of us. Hundreds of people derive great pleasure from displaying and viewing. We need to find a new home.

We could be creative and make this informal meet something more. For example, we could select a charity (or a different one each week) donate every week. 600 observers at $5 a piece would make this an appealing get together for many charities. 600x$5x52 = $150,000 per year. For this kind of money people will find us a home.

Starbucks will bring trucks with coffee wherever we go. So will Coffee Bean for that matter.

I don't want to seem negative but I thinkthe fat lady has sung on CC, even if they were to allow it to continue everyone would be on probation and sure enough a few would mess it up for all again. I think they could get nasty and start having people cited for loitering or trespassing if they wanted to push it that far in adition to passing anti-cruising laws for the area.

I would continue with the press releases to show all of S Cali what Irvine Co is about and let them handle the backlash, I am sure most of the businesses are on the car show side I know I would be but must adhere to their lease agreements and keep relations good with their landlord so the problem is the residents for sure.

I think best efforts would be concentrated on finding a new location far away.

I think this is a great idea. Especailly like the idea that the school could sell coffee/donuts, etc., to raise funds. If someone were to contact the school about this, I would guess that it would be received favorably...

IMO the bottom line is they don't want to deal with a car show anymore. If they did they would be trying to work through it or trying to make other arrangements. Instead they make it sound like it's solely because of the show's size, growing complexity and commercialism etc., all things that are hard to argue yet sound like great excuses.(for them)

Crystal cove isn't just a car show, it's a community gathering which should be encouraged by the city or local representitive. Everytime there is a peaceful gathering it's a plus for the community.... We had a car gathering like this in Bangkok about 2 years ago, but then the idots motocycle riders show off with their tricks and enjured a few people, so the police ended it all. There is nothing violent at Crystal Cove, right...?? You should get a sign out..... "WE WANT CRYSTAL COVE...!!!"

whatever happens, I say we make CC go out with a bang. Let's make these last two weeks the best two weeks the show has ever seen. I'm talking of putting Patrick Shims old idea of 5 Enzos at CC into a reality. Who agrees?
