Frankly, if you can turn into a bat, fly to a house with an open window and have a "midnight snack" you should be ready for some Z's in no time. Works for me...:D

Nyquil, or, learn how to conrol your thoughts. I didn't sleep for 3 days once, seriously, I had the same problem (girl problem.) Thoughts racing, couldn't stop thinking, etc. You may need Nyquil to help you get back in the pattern, or another sleep aid, maybe Benadryl. Take something, I recommend these two because you cannot become dependent unless you choose to, relax, control your thoughts, don't worry, and go to sleep. Maybe it's too late...

sorry, no answer for you. Has always been like this for me as far as I can remember. It's not total insomnia, just takes me some time to fall asleep.

well, i ended up falling asleep around 4:45 and having to get up for work at 5:45. i don't know what i'm so worked up about (mentally) but i've really never been able to control my thoughts. too many things running at one time.

biggest thing, i guess, is that i'm almost done with school (masters degree) and i think its making me anxious that i don't know what i'm going to do with myself afterwards. i've only got three more days left at my second job (took it for some extra cash for the car but have since decided its not worth the effort) too, so maybe thats part of it.

thanks for the suggestions though guys (or gals whichever it be)

I started college a month ago (almost exactly) and have only had 2 full nights of sleep. It sucks. I wake up at random times during the morning and usually frequently (every 25-50mins).

Thats why i'm not sleeping (a girl). Nyquil made it worse. I woke up more. In fact, it didn't kick in until my 8AM class the next day. Needless to say, that day sucked.

That's the problem. You need to be sleeping with this girl. Not not sleeping. ;)

The only suggestion I have for those who can't sleep at night is workout til you're dead tired.

Tell your doctor. There are some incredible sleep aids on the market now, such as Ambien and Lunesta, that will do wonders, and aren't habit forming. The easiest way to continue to sleep well is to get into a rhythm, which sometimes needs a kickstart, and thus the medication. Go to bed near the same time every night, don't sleep too much EVER, and don't take naps. Your circhadian rhythm will eventually click.

you know, it's weird. ever since i got to college, i've had problems sleeping. i've had 6 all nighters in the past 2 years, which easily doubles the total amount i've had before that.

Rich, I can sympathize with you... I know exactly what it's like to lie awake all night, ruminating over some of the most trivial (and not so trivial) things... The best thing is to tackle those thoughts - not with more thoughts, but physically, by taking care of whatever you need to take care of so those thoughts will stop...

If it's school, take care of school. Talk to a school counselor if you're nervous about what you'll do when you graduate - they are well-versed in exactly those kinds of anxiety. I do not recommend medication or any sort of sleep aids - no offense to anyone who takes them.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you fare.

I find Benedryl works rather well...but I don't really feel well rested the next day...takes a few hours to start to feel human again.

Getting to the root of what is occupying your thoughts is probably the best way to go about getting over your insomnia. I usually have problems getting to sleep when there is something that I know I screwed up or something that I forgot to do earlier that day.

I do like Dr.S's suggestion too though. :D

worst part is when your pillow and bed get all hot and uncomfortable, then your ears feel uncomfortable. Then you lie there and you feel your hair out of place. You roll over, trying to find a cool spot in your bed. Your ears itch again. Repeat for 4 hours.
