    Stupid question ...

    Why do some cars come with double DIN in-dash receivers? Other than being stupid expensive (not to mention very little choice) replacements?

    Yes, this is kind of a rant ... so hopefully there is a very good reason for them.

    The bigger hole in the dash allows a bigger screen for the optional navigaion system.

    You can always install a single DIN head unit into a double din slot. Usually, the other DIN slot becomes a storage box or room for some other electronic device. You are not limited when you have a double-DIN slot.

    Head units such as the (Fujitsu)Eclipse AVN5495, AVN6600, AVN5500 and AVN5436 pretty much setting the standard in double DIN head unit technology.
