the best overtaking manouvre in history... Youv'e not watched a lot of racing then... That is a standard pass. MS blocked by slower traffic. Nothing really extraordinary at all there...
Suzuka 2005. Could be one of the best race i have seen. Kimi started at the last of the grid.....made his way to the top.....and passing .....2nd place (was it michael or alonso)...in the final lap.... Do we have a video on that move??
ok....found it.... towards the end of the video....Kimi's pass on Alonso. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEFeWyNTNsE&mode=related&search=
I agree with GTE...Mansell on the OUTSIDE wide open throttle in Mexico... That was gonna work, or he was gonna be dead! There are others if you go back a little further!
Sorry folks, but I think this is a personal choice. The best overtaking manoever in history was the first time I overtook a "normal" car in my first and new-to-me Ferrari. The grin on my face was priceless -- as was the look on the face of the driver of the car I overtook. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Wasn't it Fisi who Kimi passed? And, Zanardi's "pass" at the corkscrew was not on the track, it was in the dirt. Does not count. Had there been any officials there with their head *not* up somewhere, they would have disqualified him.
When Alligator Alley was only two lanes, I was behind an Atlas Moving Van for 30 miles going west. Holiday traffic going east was intense. Just at the right moment, I saw a hole in oncoming traffic, drafted behind the semi, kicked in the supercharger, and made the pass with feet to spare. The guy in the oncoming car had no sense of humor, waved with only one finger.
Yes it was in the dirt, but later even Bryan Herta said if Alex could pull that move off without crashing it was ok.
Piquet on Senna at the end of the front straight of the Hungaroring 1986. To pull that on anyone would be ballsy, to pull it on Senna is something else.
Thanks for posting this! I loved the racing battle and the commerodery shown during the interview and the champagne shower.
I'm a Zanardi fan but that pass was pure bunk and Zanardi shouldn't have been allowed to keep his position. The rules say you are not allowed to improve your position by leaving the track surface, which Zanardi clearly did.
Mika's pass was excellent but a slower car did get involved; Mika won the battle but MS won the war (WDC). My favorite pass was Villeneuve taking Alan Jones on the outside of the 180 degree curve (Tarzan) at the end of the Vermeulen straight at Zandvoort in the 1979 Dutch GP. It was late in the season and the Williams had developed into the best handling car on the grid. That didn't stop Gilles;Jones was in the superior car and had a much better line. I happened to be in Italy at the time and saw it live on TV;still remember the commentator going crazy over the move....... The pass was brilliant but the race was famous for Gilles "antics" after he spun out. Also lost was Jody's brilliant drive to second place from the back of the grid. SmartA$$ There are too many passess too often for one to be "The Best" I would even go so far as to say MS's bozai move into turn 1 last week to pass Fisichella was one for the record books.
I always thought that the Hakkinen pass was a little over-celebrated. It was definitely a great move, no doubt about it, but I think it was more of a reflection of how desperate fans have become for something of that caliber. Consider the circumstances, where Mika spun and lost his position, only to fight back and re-take it on a high-speed pass. We've become so accustomed to the one-and-done nature of F1, where once the slightest thing goes wrong with either your car or your strategy, the race is essentially over, so why bother pushing it? I guess what I liked about that particular moment was the whole circumstance more than just the pass itself.
Yes, outside of Peralta curve. A year later, Senna tried that corner flatout in qualifying, but ended up upside down in the gravel.
But you said you have been watching F1 for so long!? Why pick such a recent one!? Give us a good one from the 80's or 70's?!
