Yeah, it was at Auskarts in Sth Melbourne. I've never driven there, but looked in on it twice. Bloody place looked slow but dangerous and I'm glad I haven't driven there now!

Irony... Her family name is Carter.

I drove there once. A very tight track in a shed IIRC.

    Was she wearing a helmet?

Those indoor karts are so heavy and slow I can't see how you could die in one - especially crashing into a tyre barrier (as opposed to something harder, rolling, etc).

The helmets they provide at such places are usually rubbish, and it may have been ill fitting or not tightened correctly, if she was wearing one at all (surely must have been...).

She looked rather frail in the images on the news. 51 years old. Another possible factor.

Sad to hear. If she was 51, then maybe her age was the major factor in this accident. A little frail. Maybe even a heart attack? Who knows? More to come in the news I guess.

can you imagine any karting place ever letting someone on track without a helmut? and i wouldn't consider hitting a tyre wall in an open vehicle to be a soft ending...

too many circumstances to say how 'easy' it would be to die... a full hard frontal impact would be enough to do some internal haemorraging, trigger a heart attack, no hans = broken neck... who knows?

John, do you know what to say to a woman with 2 black eyes?
Nothing, you've already told her twice.

Btw, I'm not sexist....its just the way they dress me.

Yes, yes I can. Anyway, if she was wearing a helmet, that makes the death even more difficult to explain.

In an indoor kart, yes it is! If I can walk away from a 100km/h impact into a tyre barrier in a kart (which wrote off the kart and turned the chassis into a banana), an indoor kart crash is soft by comparison. Lasting injuries for me was a headache which persisted for about a week, and a sore back that lasted off and on for about 9 months.

A hard ending is crashing into concrete or having the vehicle land on top of you upside down (seen both).

I smashed head on at top speed into another rental kart and the only result was a sore leg. The dumbass in front of me somehow spun out 3/4 of the way down the straight, coming to rest across the straight, leaving me nowhere to go.

Again, indoor karts are very slow. HANS in a rental kart? What are you smoking? ;)

Anyway, I think the answer is that this woman was a frail old bag who would have died slipping on a banana peel, let alone some go-kart accident.

I'm not sure if there is just more coverage of recreational car related deaths recently, or if there it is just a recent bad patch.

I just overheard on the news that there was a death of a Japanese guy in a jet car doing 300km/h at some speedway track in Victoria today.

    Sensitive words.

51 is frail now? I'd like to see how you'd go against John Bowe... and he's at least 53 that he admits to!

Just my response to the absurdity of it. They reported she didn't even want to go karting...

51 isn't frail, she looked frail judging by the photos I saw on the news, as I mentioned in my first post in this thread. ;)
