"Of course it's difficult for him, but I hope he doesn't give up," said Pat Symonds, Renault's master strategist who guided Schumacher to his first two titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995.
    .....
"It (Sunday's win) was a big relief but I'm not going to say I was happy. I'll never be happy to win a race like that."

Agreed. This championship will not be decided because MS has an engine blow. In fact, Alonso has had DNFs hurt him more than Schumacher's so this championship was closer than it should be at this very point because of Alonso's reliability! See what I posted in the other thread:

Here's some quick math if both drivers finished all races.

MS: Australia, accident while running in 6th place (qualified 10th). Add 3 points for him. FA unaffected.
FA: Hungary, wheel nut while running 1st. Add 10 points for him. Subtract 1 point from MS for being moved from 8th to 9th.
FA: Monza, engine blow while running 3rd. Add 6 points for him. MS unaffected.
MS: Suzuka, engine blow while running 1st. Add 10 points for him. Subtract 2 points from FA who would be in 2nd.

    Total MS: 12 points add.
    Total FA: 14 points add.

Net: Add 2 to FA making gap 12 meaning title would've been clinched in Suzuka.

So actually FA has been harmed more from DNFs this season than Michael.

So the argument that Michael handed the championship to Fernando simply doesn't hold water. Alonso raced well all season and both had an equal number of DNFs offsetting, but actually favoring Michael by 2 points.

Reported in the Italian press today:

As the Ferrari mechanics were packing up the equipment, they noticed Schumacher leaving. One of the mechanics asked with concern "where will find another guy like him?"

That was said after every great driver left the sport, either Clark or Senna's passing or retirements like Jackie Stewart. The sport will survive, don't worry.

Yes, the sport will survive, but I do not think we will, in our lifteime, see anyone even close to MS driving for anyone, much less for Ferrari. And as far as i'm concerned, I cheer only for Ferrari in F1.

This may have been covered in another thread, but still worth looking at again. From planet F1:

"While others at Ferrari stood crestfallen, barely able to believe the hand fate had dealt them, Schumacher put an arm around every shoulder needing support. One admirer, who greeted him in tears as he returned received Schumacher's cap in consolation'- Kevin Garside, The Daily Telegraph."

This is the MS I will remember, not what the haters are saying about him.

Of course the sport will survive. The simple point that was missed by you is that this was stated late Sunday in Japan by one of the Ferrari mechanics, and quoted by the Italian press. That's all.

Hmmm...in my lifetime alone I have witnessed Jimmy Clark, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

I suspect that either your statement is a little overblown or you have absolutely no sense of F1 history. If history has proven anything, it is that the next "Greatest Driver Who Ever Lived" will be in F1 soon enough.

As far as I am concerned, I will cheer for great racing no matter who is involved or which team he drives for.

Michael is irreplaceable to F1. There is no way anyone can fill those shoes.

He has been the inspiration to millions of people and a true champion of the sport.

Michael and his family have been great ambassadors for the sport and continue to give unselfishly to the needy!

Michael will be missed! He will always be the greatest F1 racer!

I haven't felt like posting since Saturday night. This seems such an unjust end to one of the greatest runs in Formula 1- hell, racing- history! I've said it before and will repeat it: Even the haters of Michael Schumaker will gain appreciation for him next year and beyond. There were people who hated Fangio, Senna, etc and there are those who hate Michael. But when the history books are written, we will all appreciate that we were able to witness a driving master in our lifetimes...MS is a legendary driver. I was lucky enough to catch the F1 bug in the early 90's (even though I didn't like MS when he drove for Bennetton...I was pulling for Berger and Alesi to show their stuff!)

If you can not appreciate that even within the list you provided in your negative post that Schumacher is statistically the best, then I would suggest that it is you that has no sense of F1 history. You should consider that your statement demonstrates the negativity of your life as it really has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Have you ever considerd voicing an opposite opinion without putting down the person that sees life more positively than you do? So far, in your little mind, all you have done is pretend that only you know anything about everything. And friend, with your approach, you are close to appearing that you know nothing about very little.

    Whoops, forgot that I was on your ignore list. No, wait, I think it is you that forgot that I was on your ignore list. You should have kept your word, which like your opinion seems to be meaningless. :}

I agree with you. But it is obvious not everyone that has posted in this thread shares your foresight. I doubt if we will ever see any driver in F1 as complete as Michael Schumacher.

Well what would YOU say to YOUR teammate in that situation? I would offer condolences, so would virtually every other driver on the grid from what I can see.

Sounds like you're just as selfish as Alonso, only without the talent.

    Ron,

Absolutely perfect post to start this tread. It sums things up perfectly. And unfortunately, this year I can't say "well there's always next year."

    Thanks for everything Michael (Schumacher)

I was just gutted when his engine blew, speechless. All we can ask for is for a "hail Mary" in Brazil. At the very least, I hope Michael wins the race.

Id say that the only thing that would make up for the feeling I felt when the feed cut to Michael's smoking right bank, would be a legendary drive in Brazil. Im talking a tires arent working well 5th place starting position. Somewhere in the first third of the race he is informed that Alonso has retired, and he just goes and gets it, letting no one stand in his way.

I too agree that MS is one of the great F1 drivers of all time...but, I do recall his history of cheating including winning a WC by intentionally crashing into another driver...in Japan as I recall...

Yes you are right he did that. Just like Senna did twice. That makes Senna a cheater also, right?

I guess that the greats sometime have a lapse of common sense. But then to be great, you have to be different. You have to be aggressive. I have no reason to hold that against him or Senna. There are more MS actions in the positive column than there are in the negative, so I prefer to remember the positive.
