Is an SL55 a good car for city driving? I havent driven one in a while, but someone suggested an E55 due to its practicallity. Is the SL rough for a daily driver in Manhattan streets or what? I can hardly remember.

It can be used a daily driver, but it does use low profile tires and big rims. This usually is a bad combo for driving in new york. If I had the chance to use that a daily driver i would.Snow is an issue but if you have another car or truck i would definetly get it. An e55 is also a great car having the same issues has an sl55 in the snow and city driving.

If you want a nice daily driver with a little speed, the SL55 is definitely it. The low clearance is nowhere near a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Afterall look at a lot of the higher end income levels in NYC. Many drive SL's. Had an SL for a little over a year and I was in the city all the time. The clearance was not bad at all. Nothing compared to driving my Viper through there now. The only problem you have to worry about is the winter snow since it is a rear wheel drive car but then again in the city, snow hardly ever sticks unless it is a huge storm. Good luck with your choice.

I've driven many cars in winter and in heavy snow. IMHO: rear-wheel beats front wheel hands-down. The best car I've ever driven in the snow was an old VW (microbus & squareback/variant): rear wheel drive AND the engine weight in the back. You couldn't stop 'em.

Really? I have had the complete opposite in experience. Driven the SL, 3 Series, Civics, etc and the best was the civic due to the front wheel drive. Got stuck in about 12 inches of snow and the car pulled right out.

Best RWD car I have ever driven in the snow was my SLK350 with Blizzak LM22 tires - simply unstoppable.
I drove right by a BMW X5 4.8is stuck in a snowbank @ the Radburn train station.

thats 100% tires. Those blizzaks are simply one of the two best tires in existence for winter/snow. The other, dunlop m3. The pirelli wintersports are meh.

P.S. I saw you are into reef keeping. I just got my new 180 running. What tanks do you have? Ever hang out at reefcentral?

And that's exactly my point - appropriate tires matter more than FWD or RWD - within reason. I heard the same about the Pirelli wintersports - I just dumped Pirelli Rossos that came with my SLK55 for BFGoodrich tires that have better grip and more progressive "give" than the Pirellis which were great until the gave way at the limit - these can be modulated approaching the limit even while sliding around a corner at 60mph... not that I ever do that! :)

I had an SPS dominated tank with 3 clams and a few fish until an incident forced me to re-plumb my 12g with a new downdraft skimmer and chiller on an Aquacontroller JR to prevent me from loosing all my livestock again when a pump decides to die on me.
    Got any frags? ;)

My father owns an XLR V and I am telling you to go with the SL55 it is a better car interior, performance, are better. Looks are in the eye of the beholder I think the caddy wins there, but resale you will get housed on the V. My dad's first xlr (04) he paid 78k for and got around 40k when he traded it in on the V after 26 months. For the extra 25k+- get the 55!

Trade in the car did have 43k miles on it and was one of the highest mileage ones in the country, but even an 04 with 10k can be bought for low 50's.

That makes more sense now ... the high mileage coupled with a trade-in is just a dealer's wet dream when it comes to selling a new car.

Just an FYI on the XLR...they're leasing for DIRT cheap right now. I mean dirt cheap...

Go to Martin Cadillac and ask for Jamieson. He's here on Fchat and is the man to speak to if you're in the market for a Caddy.

My personal vote would be with the SL55...but to each his or her own.

Especially when $$$ comes into play...

Dunlop M3 > * (I just bought those to put on my oem wheels so I have an excuse to go aftermarket in the Spring) ...as for the others in the thread posted a week or two ago, those are going on another car since the blizzak ws-50 are non winter performance tires.

    Thanks.

I drove the SL again around the city, and I've decided to get the SL55. It's perfect for my needs.

I was thinking of upgrading to 19 or 20 inch wheels... I actually like the 19 inch SL65 gunmetal rims. I don't know if 20s would be too large for city driving? Need to check out the snow tires too.

Teenferrari Fan has been hating on the XLR V since day one. Just to point this out clear, this is Cadillacs first convertible and sports convertible since the allante, give them a chance. Mercedes has owned the convertible game for years now buddy.

However, I was just suggesting a option to save 20,000 or so. The SL55 in my great choice, however in my oppinon I think its going to get get beat up, ruined and its going to suck in the snow. Get a SUV or something to get past winter and then you should get a SL for the spring/summer months. Come in and test drive one for a half hour if you wish. We just had two guys come in who had E55's and just got two STS V's and fell in love with them just to mention.

So with whatever you may choose but what makes you the most happy.

    Good Luck!
