Further proof testarossa's should skyrocket in value... :).

i simply can't believe the testarossa will be a $30K car. i would buy another at that price. i think it's a great car for the money, and the maintenance isn't killer. my car has sat for about 2+ years before i bought it and i only had to replace fuel lines. i think the annual maintenance of a TR can be low, 2-3K per year. compare that to the V8s, i think it is favorable for a 12 cyl.

i'm sure that as time passes there will be more ratty cars on the market, those will be the 30K cars, and they will probably create enough of an impression on uniformed buyers so as to dull the entire TR market. but i think, eventually, the duds will be separated from the studs in buyers' minds and the better cars will bring much more money than ratty cars...much like 308s today.

You have mentioned this in more than one thread multiple times, with all due respect, I will like to know what shape are these $30K Testarossas in? service history? Place of origin, are they gray market cars or US versions? In other words, in the world of exotic automobiles, a little more detail on these cars other than just a blanket statement would be appreciated.

A good friend of mine is selling his ~'92 AMG 500E. Only owner with all the service records for $15K. It was around $90K-$100K when new and was the state of art back then. It has a lot of electronic aids that are starting to go bad and starting to need to be replaced. According to him, the electronic throttle unit is about $1,500 to replace (If you have a V12 MB, you will need two of these). And it is not any cheaper to up keep when compared to Ferraris, Lamborgihinis or Porshces. It has been on Craiglist for at least a couple of month with no buyers. My point is, I can tell you the asking price of a well kepted 1992 AMG 500E, which IMO, is a little better measuring stick to start with than the generalized quote of "There are many Testarossas selling in the $30K range".

 

I suspect they are #3 or #4 cars that need a major service ..but, I do not know for sure...

After watching Barrett-Jackson over the years it appears to me that they drive he market - not the other way around. I suggest that F-Car/ TR prices have been driven down by Barrett-Jackson (though perhaps not intentionally).

When was the last time you saw quality, vintage F-Cars at a BJ auction - cars that will catch 'new' top dollar values and drive the market 'up'? Yes, a few nice, late model cars pass the block at average prices - but I do not recall much (any?) in the way of top quality, vintage F-Cars. e.g: the last daytona I saw cross the BJ block was a dog. The BJ 'dog' examples have deserved bottom dollar and as such, have driven the overall market 'down'.

I suggest that the F-Car prices will stay depressed until BJ decides that euro cars are 'in'. Maybe the 914 will get the ball rolling(?).

Show me a running TR for 30K and I will buy it now. Seems like misinformation is being spread, yet again, by another misinformed boxer owner, that isn't even involved with the TR market. Ratty cars selling at auction aren't indicative of the market price of a car.

 

Napolis sold his running TR a few years ago for under $30k.

 

Rifledriver - your post made me look into it a bit deeper.... you may have a valid point. I took the BJ auction 'sale' prices and the year of auction and graphed 'em. The graph appears to make a TR 'hold' recommendation.

Those prices are pretty strong but not surprising for an auction frenzy. People go to those things and leave their brain at home. Have seen a lot of 2nd and 3rd rate cars go across for more than great cars go for out of the circus tent.

Maybe this is like the depression/WW2 days - cars were bought and sold over tires or the amount of gas in the tank...so, center-lock 16" Testarossas become more valuable for a servicable set of tires than for the cosmetic or mechanical quality?

They do not drive the Ferrari market.

You need to take a look at the auction results from the various Monterey weekend auctions for comps. Those auctions are all about Ferraris, race cars and other European exotics.

If I find/found a Testarossa in the 30s that was running, I would buy in a heartbeat. As would 1000s of others.......

With that being said, I am not sure about TRs going in the 30s at auction. Maybe 3-4 years ago when prices seemed to wane for a bit.

Heck, I remember for a bit when 308s were found from $16k for beaters to $25k for a good car in the standard market. 328s ranged from $25k - 32K and some 348s were getting close to the $34k range.

Seems to me like EVERY Ferrari from 308 to Testarossa has gone up around $5k per car.

And that isn't even getting into Boxer level where I remember seeing a few for $65k that were nice cars.

And Countaches that were in the $55k range for a running decent car that now sells for $75-80k.

Yep, 4-5 years ago seems like a different time!!!

I even remember a scoundrel of a judge buying a 308 in Chicago for DIRT cheap!!! I remember a certain fellow FChatter crying like a little baby about not getting it first, for weeks. The guy couldn't let it go for the longest time. Probably STILL brings it up!! ;-)
