I have a very soft spot in my heart for these cars, always have. And I guess it gets a bit softer as I age and spend more time around them. I am glad to see the guys made it out okay, thats always the most important, obviously. But seeing that car burn kinda hurts to watch. I know its not even close to the same thing, it pales in any comparison, but seeng those first flames develop reminds me of the first flames from the Challenger. Once you seen the rest, everytime you see the first flicker of flame you know where its headed. I hope the car can be saved but I have a feeling by the time they stopped a lot of damge was incured. Keep checking your fuel lines guys. Maybe that onboard fire system isnt such a bad idea afterall.
terrifying when you realize they are tightly strapped in, with fuel tanks on both flanks and probably going real fast, can we tell if this is a carbs car...wonder if their race mods, if any, were present... shows you you can't rely on a tech inspection for safety , you have to be vigilant yourself still, since everyone seems to be OK, we should really turn this into a "photo caption" contest. I'll start "either we are burnnin' some serious rubber or you left your grilled chicken lunch on the headers again" " damn 308 a/c never works.." my favorite ".......it's getting hot in here...so let's take off all our clothes.."
...Hey check out the crazy exhaust flame shooter I picked up at the last SEMA show... ..now we're cookn'...
Amen. Did i ever tell you at the Lime Rock event in July i passed Tech Inspection and no more than 5 minutes later while double checking things i saw some fluid slowly dripping on the driver's side under the car. Touched it and PHEW it was not gas smell, not dark like oil... Yup, had a small crack in the engine small upper coolant hose. Took me all of 5 minutes to fix and 10 more minutes to refill with water and burp the system. If it had blown on track due to the added water pressure the coolant would have hit hot engine... plus sprayed rear driver's tire to cause slip-n-slide action. Moral of story: spend a few extra minutes before and after EACH track run to check everything out. The life (and car) you save may be your own!
Looking at all the photos, i think you are right. Geeze, where are the track marshalls? Heck, how about piping in a fire system if you are going to seriously track your car???
"Hey Luigie, I fixa da heater" Ad campaign; "Its FERRARI; not on fire-are-we" "When he said run some hot laps he didn't mean...oh nevermind" "Damm Italian fuseboxes" Calls the wife, "Honey I didn't get ripped off. I promise all Ferrari cars do this. When you see cars advertized that say needs a major this is what they mean."
"I knew I shouldn't have vented the Nitrous into the engine bay" "I wonder if we can drive faster than the flames" playing on the radio: (Burn baby burn) Disco Inferno (Burn baby burn) Burn that mother down (Burn baby burn) Disco Inferno (Burn baby burn) Burn that mother down Satisfaction came in a chain reaction I couldn't get enough, so I had to self-destruct The heat was on, rising to the top Everybody is going strong, and that is when my spark got hot I heard somebody say...
The engine, the engine, the engine's on fire We don't need no water let the Motherf***er burn Burn Motherf***er, burn Don't play with me 'Cuz you're playing with fire You don't care for me I don't care about that Gotta new fool, well I like it like that I have only one burnin' desire Let me stand next to your fire
"dude, wicked burn-out" and they'll have to change the catch-phrase on the back of the 308 to "Toasted Bits of Italy" Tune the driver was singing while driving: --------------------------------------- The time to hesitate is through No time to wallow in the mire Try now we can only lose And our love become a funeral pyre Come on baby, light my fire Come on baby, light my fire Try to set the night on fire, yeah (BTW: Those are amazing pictures and it drives home the point that we all must be very careful. It really hurts to see anybody in that situation and especially a 308 go up in flames)
