Need a fair value assessment on a 348 ts

Looking at a ’89 red/tan 348 ts 35K miles. All routine maintenance is up to date and car has service history/records dating back to 95’. Car had its last major (engine out) service in 2002. So, the seller is discounting the car because of a major needing to be done next year. Car is driven weekly, not a garage queen. Car is clean and has not seen rain. No accidents. I drove the car for over 1 hour and the car runs great!

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being showroom quality), exterior is 9 and interior is 8 (interior has the usual sticky vents, faded carpet, some faded leather on seats, etc.). All instrumentation and power equipment is functional, i.e. power mirrors, windows, gauges, A/C, Fans switches, etc.

Can I get some feedback from some fellow F-Chatters on what you think a fair market price would be? With major being discounted, I’m thinking around 41k?

If I decide to pursue, next step will be to schedule a PPI on the car.

I have been in the market for a 348 for about 2 months and finally found a good one and bought it last week. Judging from the buying experience that I have gathered in the last 2 months (which is not much) from several cars that I looked at, it seems to me that you assessment of the car in relation to the price minus the major service cost is very reasonable.

In fact, I think you're still reasonable paying $42K or $43K for it, keeping in mind that you have to do a major. I looked at about 5-6 cars and my comment here is based on my assessment of all of them. Make sure to steer away from the ones that try to justify their asking price by stating that their car is the best in the Universe and is the favorite of the "Gods".

$38 - $40 It is a 89 so it is at the low end of the scale.

 

The price of a car and how good of a "deal" it is for you all comes down to how bad you want the car.

An average deal would be $40-42K. A good deal would be $38-39K. A great deal would be $36-$37K.

On the other hand, if you want a 348 NOW, there's probably not many floating around at any given time for under $40K, regardless of whether or not it needs the 30K service.

So you either have some patience or you fork over a few extra $$ grand and get it now.

 

The price sounds okay to me too, but u realize that among the 348's the early years are the least sorted out and the most problematic. Motronic 2.5 vrs. 2.7 for later cars, delicate transmission, and a host of other issues. Not trying to talk u out of it, but be aware. Can u scrape together enuff cash for a '94?

 

Sorry to disagree, but I like the 89 348s. It has less problematic seat belts, better (IMO) seat design, simpler (and more manageable) engine management, stronger clutch. If the build quality is poor it would show on the buyers long test drive. Rattles, squeaks??? No mention of it. The exhaust ECU and A/C compressor are the only issues I have had. Ingenere has had his 89 since new and basically says it is solid. All the talk about the early cars being less sorted is baloney. If I was going to sell my car before I just did the major service I would not have accepted less than $45k. If you can get it for $41k that is a bargain. I would rate my car similar to the one you describe, 9 exterior and 8 interior. I have about 10k less miles at 24k, but that would not be worth more than $3k in my opinion. The 89 is a great model year to buy, I have read many more threads about mechanical problems on the newer cars than I have about the 89 cars. Search the archives and you will agree.

I would think that any nice 348 on the road today, regardless of the year of make, has long since been thoroughly sorted out as a matter of necessity.

The seller and I have come to an agreement. I have a PPI scheduled for next Tue in Kansas City. If the PPI goes well, I may be a Ferrari owner by next weekend! Very exciting!!

My '89 is very eary (35th car of the run and the 5th US car)....and it has been great. I have had it for 16+ years and it has been reletively bullit proof. A couple of gearbox issue, but now it has been rebuilt with all the strengthed 355 bits, so that is a non issue. The fact that there are no mouse belts should add 20K to the price!

 

Oh boy do the mouse belts stink! I am not a fan of them at all.
