On my 1984 400i, the radio is always powered. The radio on my car is wired so that it can always be turned on whether the ignition switch is on or off. This leads to a situation where I go for a drive, turn the radio on and when getting back into the garage, I forget to turn it off leading to of course, a dead battery.

Does every 400I do this or is my car miswired

    Thanks, Tony

My '84 is the same way. What are you listening to the radio for though? The best music is coming from the tail pipes. :)

Ferrari's have been traditionally wired so the radio is always "hot".

My radio (83 400i) is always on if the switch is on, but its probably been a couple of years since I've used it. I do cycle the antenna up and down regularly to make sure that the contacts are clean and it still works.

Radio? Smadio! Listen to the V12!!!

Volkswagens and Audis used to be radios always hot. Newer Audis (not sure about Volkswagens) radios are also hot when the ignition is off, however they automatically turn off in 1 hour.

I like the feature..I wish more cars did that. I remember my Corrado was the first year when Volkswagen radios turned off with the car, I re-wired it always hot. I like it.

According to the wiring diagramme, the radio is always powered. In my 400i (1984) someone has replaced the original radio by a Becker Mexico from the late 90es and has wired it also for permanent power although it (the radio) is designed for a permanent auxiliary supply (for the antitheft system) and the main switched power supply (with ignition on). The result was a permanent power drain of 700 mW which has emptied the battery in a couple of days. The pre-owner has cured it with a battery main switch!
After re-wiring the radio, it is now all ok. The Becker can be turned on for one hour with the ignition off. The disadvantage is that whenever the engine is stopped (we are supposed to stop the engine e.g. in front of red traffic lights or railway crossings) I must push the ON butten of the radio immediately to keep it going.

    Regards

    Peter

On my 82, the aftermarket Sony radio turns off when the car is turned off.
