I know I'm openning my self up to who the hell knows what but I'm confident that someone out there has the perfect name for a high end repair and restoration shop. I have been thinking about this for a while and have yet to decide on one. I am not interested in the normal first or last name of the mechanic or anything like that. Would like it to have an Italian flair. Can't wait to see what is tucked away in your minds.

    Regards,

    Jeff

Just off the top of my mind,

NOSTALGIA, with Renovations or Restorations in the name.

MASTORAS = Means master or meistro.

ARETE / ARATOS = Means without peer or equal, supreme.

    Ciao...Paolo

    Hi Jeff,

I've owned a number of businesses. I think a good rule of thumb is that the name should go a long way to describing what you do. Here are some of my businesses over the years as an example:

    RAJ Software (software development)
PC Consulting (Personal Computer consulting and repair)
510 Again - The National Datsun 510 Club (car club for datsun 510's)
    Target Central (gun targets)
DayTraders.com (financial services for day traders and investors)

you get the idea. If I was starting a restoration shop, I'd probably call it "The Restoration shop" or "Ray's Automotive Restorations". "The Restoration Location". Something like that. If you get too abstract, your business might suffer.

The most popular body shop in town for Ferrari stuff was called "All Around Auto".. they did pretty much everything you needed (i.e. "All around").

If the name does not tell the person what you do, then you are probably already in deep water.

If you want an Italian flair, put a prancing horse in the logo or something :)

    Ray

Much appreciated. We want it to say what we do but definatley want to seperate it from the rest. We realize that the ultimate test is with the quality of work that comes out of it.

There is more than one school of thought on this. I'm certianly no expert, but I do read extensively on marketing and case studies. The strongest trademarks are those that have no inherent meaning to them; the weakest trademarks are those that are merely descriptive. IE, Kodak, one the strongest trademark in the book; it says nothing about what the company does, yet we all know. Escalator is another - it used to be a very strong trademark, but has been diluted over the years to being merely descriptive because the owners of the original mark did not defend and prosecute effectively. Now, you're probably not worried about defending and prosecuting your restoration shop's name, but these are just examples of other thoughts and ideas rolling around.

Also, a more unique name is often thought to stick in somebody's mind a bit longer. "The Restoration Shop" may slip someones mind because it is so generic, but something unique may make someone think a bit and thus stick. Similarly, 800#s that spell out something are strongly discouraged because people THINK they will remember, not write it down, and then forget it. So, instead of 800-RESTORE I would prefer to have 800-555-1212 for my business because nbody thinks they will remember that number and will write it down as soon as they hear it.

My two cents, FWIW. Good luck!

    Brennan

Just an idea, name it simply Automobile (Restoration & Repair), and yes automobile is italian (also?). Simple, easy to remember, explanatory, has an italian essence to it, in the beginning of the alfabeth and so on...

I guess I'm just not confident enough. I thought of Luigis right away, but for some reason thought it might sound funny. But that scene inside his shop, the posters, his attitude to his customers...that kind of guy would sleep well at night. I keep thinking I should open a shop, get my hands dirty again, but I'm a big dumb swede. Luigis just wouldnt work, everyone would always be asking me for the owner, LOL.

Thats funny! Most Scandinavian names wouldnt be so good. Thor's, Hagnar's, Lief's, Eric the reds. Ole's might not be so bad, but anything else would have people picturing some guy with a huge hammer. But Im an English Irish and Danish Swede, so I have a lot more names to wreck. ArtVonne's might work for me.

It can be taken even one step further: Professor Lutefisk's Italian Car Emporium.

On second thought, it wouldn't work. Not enough people know what a lutefisk is.... :(
