I'm prepared to admit I'm starting to obsess on the little stuff, but I figure that's because I've finished doing all the big stuff.

The power antenna on my car gave up the ghost, the plastic drive spline (or whatever you wanna call the thing that moves the antenna up and down) broke, rendering my antenna useless.

I shopped around for a good replacement. Autovox could have been original to the car, but there were a couple of other options as well. Hirshmann was one that was suggested to me as well.

Dennis McCann had an Autovox on ebay that started at $150, and quickly was removed from auction. When I inquired about it, he said he didn't have any in stock. It reappeared on his website for $375 a couple days later. I was offered another one for even more. Well, much more.

So I did a little digging and found one for under $100. Not only that, but the guy has several dozen.

I installed it into my car this week. It has a replacement toggle swith that looks identical to the one that was in my car. Works the same way, semi-automatic, and is a perfect fit. Took about 20 minutes to get right, and replace the old switch.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you the guy's email address.

I have a restored Becker radio and a Hirshmann antenna of the same age which I plan to install in my Dino some day when time permits.

    Quick questions:

    1) when you say your antenna is semiautomatic, what do you mean?
    2) can the antenna go up and down when you turn the radio on instead of installing a separate toggle switch
    3) Any reason to scrap my Hirshmann and go with the Autovox. I know mine is the right vintage but I'm open to suggestions.

    Thanks...Keith

My understanding is these cars came with a variety of installed antennas, and no pre-installed radios from the factory as a US spec.

Semi automatic meaning it goes up and down with the toggle switch, independent of the radio operation. turning on the radio doesn't raise the antenna. Turn on the radio, raise the antenna with the toggle switch.

I'm looking around under the dash now for a switched power supply for the antenna. As it was wired, you can raise or lower the antenna with the car turned off right now.

There's no such thing as a stock Radio in these, so anything that's from the year your car was built, or frankly a year or two later, would be correct in my my book. After all, since they came wothout a radio, you could install anything at any time, right?

I'd keep what you have and re-install them.

ther were no radios on usa spec delivered models in the usa. if your usa spec model had a radio, it was independant of any radio, hence the toggle switch on the left of the dash.

as with any original item, whether in working condition or not, i would keep it aside if i replaced it for a more modern/better item. after all, having broken/out of date items is far better in the long run.

The original antenna on my car was long gone, as was the radio. I replaced a cheapo [edit] busted [edit] no-name power antenna with the Autovox.

And stuck a nice Becker in the dash.

Does it come with the correct chrome trim piece that mounts on the outside of the car (looks kinda like a half ball)?

    Bope.

It comes with the almost correct black plastic trip piece that says Autovox on it.

I would suggest that even a concours nut would not object to this iteration.

    Here's a picture.

I don't want to install a radio to compete with the V6 music. I just want one so that I don't sing the same song over and over again.

130 mph in the rain, Ray Charles blasting out "I can see clearly now" No joke intended, please!
It's my favourite version of that song. Then my ignition packed up..........So all I had was the radio.
