Soon after I restored my Dino, I found an original Carrello air filter (paper with a metal wrapping) so I installed that. I looked at these new style filters but I wasn't sure if they were any good. It just looks like carpet with rubber doughnuts on the end!

Perhaps the new ones are better? equivalent? I know there are some pretty technically savvy guys on this alias and owners who have put these things to the test. Let me know your thoughts/experience with them.

Ditto on the E-9240 K&M. Also if your into paper filters the Wix 42220 fits the bill.

I had a TR6 with a motor that was tweaked by a Brit vintage racer and mechanic. It was making a ton of extra HP. He swore by K&N filters, and I had them in that car. I have not had them in any of the other cars I've owned.

I'm putting one in the Dino on the next maintenance, but I'm still not sure they really make a difference. And if they do, the performance increase probably wouldn't be noticeable anyway.

Don't they claim to filter out more particulates and make more horsepower?

Actually, the paper filter is better at keeping out the finest particles but the K&N flows more air and does a respectable job at filtering. If you look at the small size of the motor and the very large size of the Dino filter area, you can probably get by with anything available and not find any difference in performance. I tried the paper Wix and now have the K&N and notice no difference. The air cleaner is not the place where you will find restriction in the 246 so you might as well get the best paper you can find.

The origional "Fuzzy" air filter for the Dino's is hard to beat. If maintained properly they last 20 yrs with excellent filtering. Makes it a darn good value over the long run.

So, are the fuzzy ones original or are the Carrello air filters with the metal mesh and the paper filament original? I'll have to pull out my parts book and check it out.

I've only seen UFI as original OEM.

    Dave,
I have one; the outside is a bit dusty and is decorated with a few webs & leaves, but seems pristine on the inside. What manner of maintenance do you recommend?
    Thanks,
    Coop

Soap and water dunking, a good rinse off, dry em out and stick it back in. The paper replacement does filter a bit better. Each owner has to decide what is "good enough" for themselves. I still have the fuzzy filters in my cars.

I'll have to get a photo of the Carrello air filter just so you guys don't think I'm making this up! When I bought my car, it had the UFI fuzzy in it. In truth, I'm sure Dave is right on - all of the filters are probably good enough.

    Thanks, Dave. I'll try that.

Just for grins, I picked up a Napa 2220 (WIX H/D Truck Filter) to verify that it fits. By comparison with the 'fuzzy' filter, it's a tad smaller in O.D. & I.D., and is slightly longer. (Go to the Napa website & it gives you the specs.) The ends are flat, too, but don't have that raised, flexible rubber flange around the inside edge at both ends. However, with a bit of gentle "compression" between two flat surfaces, the cylinder shrinks slightly & fits, save for a slight gap between the lid & cannister after tightening the knurled knob. I'll re-tighten after a few heat cycles & see if the lid will snug up to the cannister. A fresh (thicker) rubber gasket on the lid might also help. At any rate, there is a complete seal inside at both ends of the filter, so all air is cleaned.

'trust our discussion has helped, Danny John. Any luck Down Under?

That is indeed what I classify as a fuzzy filters. The filters which use paper have a metal mesh over them, which is most certainly not fuzzy.

Here is what I use, the brown fuzzy UFIs.

I bought a long term supply of air, oil and fuel filters.
