Here's my situaion. I was enrolled in a Canadian University (History) but had to quit half-way through the first semester. Now, 4 years later I would like to get a diploma since I have a possibilty of getting a juicy position in a Bank/International Company in a few years but I need that diploma.

Problem is, I work full time and have no time to go go to classes. However I am VERY strong in History (Without false modesty. I was reading Tacitus's The Annals when I was 10 and can probably go for a doctorate in WW2 history). What are my options? Is their a "SERIOUS" on-line university? Not some Mexican 150$ a diploma-palooza?

    Thanks

    Niko

Hey man, feel your pain. For what its worth :

I currently work in an International Bank full time. I also go to school half time at night (3 nights a week). It sucks alot sometimes with the schedule but the benefits are well worth it. IMO online education is waste of money unless you just want a diploma, but even then, many companies will not view it as highly as a regular school.

Just my 2 cents but you should look into schools offering classes at night. Anything is possible man, and like many of the succesful guys on here will tell you, there is no substitute for sacrifice and hard work.

(PS. When I finish my degree in Poli Sci I am going to Law School - currently a legal assistant)

Night school is not a problem in principle. However it sucks that I would have to go to classes that I know all about. I would like to maybe just do the assignments and pass the exams as fast as possible.

How about a bachelors from an online Univesity, then a Minor or a Major from night courses in a "real" University? Would Universities recognize the on-line diplomas?

They probably require a degree for the position that he is looking for. They don't necessarily care if it is in History, Economics, Astro-physics, or Underwater Artesian Basket-weaving.

Hell on a day to day basis I use very little of what I learned in school...and I have two degrees! It does make Jeopard a little easier though. :)

Isn't the University of Arizone one of the VERY few accredited universities offering degree programs?

If I were doing one, I'd probably do that one. Or I'd just buy some diploma from a diploma mill and make myself a doctor of bioengineering or something equally pompous sounding :)

You mean the online University of Phoenix ?

I checked into it, it was cheaper to go to my local state University right down the street from me.
If memory serves me, U of P was cheap the first two years, but very expensive the second two years, or vice-verse.

Well, no. I already did all the work (I have quiet a collection of history books.) I just don't want to go to classes to hear about events in which I have knowledge that exceeds the curriculum.

Ok, an overblown example, like Stephen Hawking being required to go to college physics classes to renew his tenure.

Not a good one at all as Stephen DID go to the college physics classes when he was in college and the 3rd - 6th form (British High School). And has the degrees to show it.

That is what you want, right? The degree to SHOW that you know this stuff.

No that was just an example. I already know the course material. I just need to pass the exams.

I know lots of people (myself included) that knew much of the material for their undergrad or grad degrees but sat in classes anyway to "get the paper".

Suck it up and hit night school. Took me (way longer than I like to admit) years of working 8:00 to 6:XX then headed to school two to three nights a week until (sometimes) 11:30 pm to do it. That was while changing jobs twice, renovating a house and first born arrived. You'll find the time, trust me. If you really know the material that well, preparing for exams should be a snap. If you wind up just 'buying a diploma", you may regret it one day.

    Good luck.

Another problem I have is that my best language is English and I live in a French/German canton. So while I can learn in French, I prefer English by far.

Ok, so I checked out the U of Phoenix online. So fa so good. Me licky. One big question. Will a Bachelors degree (Management for example) from this place be accepted as a real University degree (forget about how prestigious/recognised.)? Can I then do a Masters course in a regular University? Will they recognise the Bachelor degree?

Anybody know any other good online Unis?

Call a couple of the schools you would like to get a masters from and ask their opinion of a U of P bachelors. Those are the only opinions that matter.

    Barely.

You will likely end up not wanting to be in the university that would accept it.

    No.

You are not going to like it, but I'm going to say to suck it up and just go through a regular university program at a decent school. Take 20 credits a semester, go straight through and graduate in 2.5 years if you want. You're a young guy, it's not that big of a sacrifice in the long run.
