I was just called (Yes, at 11:30 pm.) to go back to the war. I got back in Dec and they just rang the bell and asked if I would volunteer to go again. I have till tomorrow 5:00 EST to tell them yes or no. If I say yes, I leave in Jan. If I say no I don’t go unless they call and say, “We’ll see you there!!!”

Not sure what to do right now. I have never refused a request. If I did, and someone else was told to go, as they would certainly be, how would I feel if I ever found out that “something” happened.

    Needless to say… I’m drinking!!!

Surely you have to say no. Who will run the FChat Police? That is a much more important position than fighting the war in Iraq.

That's a heavy decision. All I can say is that I don't think you should make it based on the possibility that someone else might end up taking your place and there being negative consequences. Whatever the outcome of someone else going, that outcome will be dependent on their actions while there, not yours now. Thanks so much for your service so far, whatever your decision.

Can you really call it a 'war' ?

It's more of a 'police action', IMO.

In a war, you can have a roundtable among all participants and discuss a truce, I don't think that will ever be possible there. And on top of that, we have Iran with nukes, and the Turks are getting pissed off, Pakistan isn't too happy......

You have done a lot already so you should not feel obligated to go again. Talk it over with your other half if you have one and do what you feel is right for you. A cat gets nine lives, take an accounting of yours.

Whatever you do, good luck and thanks for what you have already contributed.

Just curious doc, i know your a marine but how long have you been in? And i assume your marine reserve right? Im deciding which branch to go right now and id like to go army reserves but both my bros(x army) say dont do it? my big thing right now is finishing school but i still want to go in but it looks like reserves wont be my thing. In the army if you havent been full time youll get screwed if you go reserves. If my bros went reserves they could still get any job they want since they were prior service but if i was to go in id most likely get screwed and be stuck in some damn motor pool or something like that. Basically what im asking is are the marines more lenient towards reserve guys in regards to job choice or are they like the army and they tell you where your going to go?

Tough call, every time I hear of someone I now going over there I think it would be the last time I see or hear from them. So far no one I know has been wounded or killed. I got a good friend of mine that been now on his third tour for the Army. He served in the Gulf war back in 90’s so he's got plenty of experience. I guess it all depends on what you do over there. Whatever you decide to do I’m sure you will make the right decision.

I wouldnt go. When the political leadership engages the military forces in a scenario where troops can get killed but due to policy and rules of engagement no true military victory is possible then in my mind the political leadership has broken the trust. You have served, you owe nothing more. If the Iraqi people want freedom and democracy and all that... they only way they will ever get it is if THEY fight for it.

Besides.... your life is worth more than all of Iraq and every Iraqi in it.

Wow. I wish more "average" americans knew more about this side of war - the decision our volunteers struggle with to decide to go/not go.

Best wishes to you and your decision - and thank you for all you have done for us already.

I obviously don't understand all the circumstances, but am curious why you were asked instead of told? I've never been in the military, so have no idea how those things work, but the people I have known that serve get orders. A good friend/coworker is there now, serving for the Navy.

Me personal opinion is, you've done your part. Thank you.
