Ferrari Snobs

Dear all.Since the age of about 5 or 6 i have loved Ferraris,a love passed down by my father and brother so the desire to own my own was great.
Three years ago i bought my beautiful 308 GT4.It must have taken me roughly ten years to save the money!.The enjoyment i get from this car is fantastic but can someone explain why there is so much snobbery towards this car.I know all the rubbish about it being a V8 and not a V12 and that it was originally badged as a Dino but the V8 range must be the most succesful range of all Ferraris.Is it because they are cheap by Ferrari standards and that allows plebs like me to buy one-maybe.I can ashore you that my love of all Ferraris is much greater than these so called enthusiasts i have met.All the best to you all-Steve.

Personally, I love the car. I reckon you should not worry too much about what people think about your car mate. You worked hard at it for 10 years(which is awesome BTW) to buy the car. Let people say what they want to say about it. It is your car and your dream and as long as you are happy, thats the main thing.

 

Steve, had a ride yesterday in a 308 on track. The owner obviously had been tracking his car for years - very, very smooth with the gated shifter, we drifted cleanly through every turn, the ultra high profile tires gripping surprisingly well. The car was a high mileage, bone stock example - and loads of fun.

It was a very cold, windy day, and I gave up on my 430 Challenge after two pathetic efforts at getting even a little heat in the tires.

So, which car was "better"?

Ignore the snobs.

 

Yes, ignore the snobs. It is they that do not understand. Your car is just as much a Ferrari as the guy in the Enzo. His is just a bit faster, but they both have the same roots.

 

The guys in the UK section might be a little weird but few of them are snobs

The 308 section here has an incredible array of information and advice for owners like you that would not have been posted if all were as you say

And never forget that unlike most new Ferraris which are on some form or other of credit yours has actually been earnt and paid for

 

I've never even seen a 308 GT4 in person before. I can't wait to see one and a ride in one would be even better. It's one of the few Ferraris in my price range and there is a good chance that I'll own one in the future.

Put the snobs on ignore. I think any Ferrari (or dino if that matters) is a great ride, and you should just enjoy it. People who look down on you for not owning the newer model have a problem, you do not.

I loved riding in the 308 GT4. Dave took me "around the block" in his. Very nice car, very enjoyable!

 

Please post some pictures of your car and forget about the snobs. The GT4 handles better then the other 308s and having no fuel injection it makes a better noise than many younger cars !
It's the car i want but i'm still on the money saving process...l just hope that the prices don't move too much...

GT4's have been gaining in popularity the past few years as the body style is now less "dated" and instead more "classic". That happens with cars as they get 30+ years old. You're on the cutting edge!

Look at it this way, your GT4 was designed under the direction of Mr. Enzo Ferrari himself. The F430 was not. So you could argue that the GT4 is more a "real" Ferrari than a modern one.

They are all Ferraris and the only people who are going to be snobby about the GT4 or the Dinos not being "real" Ferraris are either clueless or jerks. Either way, ignore them.

The 206,246 and 308GT4 were given the designation Dino in honour of Enzos much loved son of the same name not many Ferraris can have that claim to fame the GT4 is a much underrated car and IMO is a future classic and a great investment and also a great looking car.

 

Hey don't feel bad. Just the other day, someone was talking down about my car because it was only a coupe and only a 360...

 

At our local FCA event here in North Carolina last weekend, a 308GT4 won the People's Choice award at our concours! Folks who "know" can appreciate the Bertone wedge, and the fact that it's a rather unique design compared to the current Pininfarina monopoly on sketchbooks.

Unfortanately in recent years, I have noticed a major change in Ferrari owners. When I first started to own Ferraris in the late 1970's the other owners were enthusiasts who loved the cars for what they were and not as a representation of wealth or show. While these folks do still exist, in recent times, people have bought cars because they have new wealth and wish to show it off. They would not know a 250 SWB for a hole in the wall. The Ferrari is today's bauble or penis representation. Ignore them and enjoy your car. The early V 8 cars are fun and still as enjoyable as any newer model. Welcome.

 

Snobs are insecure people who try to make themselves look better by discounting others. Whether it be Ferrari model, net worth, knowledge, physical prowess, whatever... they want people to think they are superior because they lack the self confidence to have people accept them as a person.

I also LOVE it when a snob is handed their hat by someone who is superior, yet humble. I heard a couple of examples:

1) A Ferrari owner was overheard making a condescending remark to a fellow frequent traveler who mentioned he flew coach to LA and got stuck in a middle seat between two large gentlemen. The snob retorted ...'I haven't flown anything but first class in years. I can't believe you still fly coach. (Nose in the air)." Without missing a beat, a third gentleman (rather well to do unbeknownst to the snob) turned to the snob, and with a parting remark left him standing alone with a "...first class? What, you still fly commercial airlines???"

2) In the locker room at a prominent country club in the LA area four members were playing gin. A relatively new member wandered up and queried the group as to the stakes. They replied, "We are playing for 25 cent a box and five dollars a game." The newbie exclaimed, '...you call that gambling?! Come on guys, play for some real money!" At that point, one of the members looked up from the game as asked ". Young man, what is your net worth?” The newbie puffed his chest at this opportunity to crow and said “Why around $5.5 million." The member then said "I will cut you high card for $5.5 million right now". The newbie looked around the locker room as by now a number of people had gathered. They looked at him and nodded as if to verify that this was indeed a legitimate wager. After a few moments of awkward and embarrassing silence, the member dismissed the newbie by saying "if you want to gamble, then let's gamble. Otherwise, shut the **** up and let us play cards!"

The moral to this, (if there must be a moral) is that no matter how superior one thinks they are, there is always someone bigger, better, smarter, richer, etc. Be careful Mr/Mrs Snob, you may just be handed your hat.

 

As a 330 2+2 owner, I'm in kind of the same situation...though it's a bonafide vintage 12, in certain circles my car is an insignificant production model, suitable for engine and parts harvesting...as if I give a rat's ass.

IMO, the 308GT4 is a classic, in a chronological as well as design sense...there are a couple of beautiful ones in the local Ferrari crowd.

Pay no attention to the jerks and enjoy your car, mate.

Are you caling me weird

The Gt4 is a great underrated car, its the sad minority who would look down at you, a Ferrari is a Ferrari be it £15k or be it £150K, there was a highly modified Gt4 beating most of the 355 challenge cars in the Uk Ferrari Open Challenge a couple of weeks ago, I know which I would rather take home (the Gt4)
