Did you guys know that Massa broke an F1 rule by accepting the Brazilian flag from the spectator before driving back to the holding area?

    www.grandprix.com Just for the record....

Go to 10-23-2006 and read about it. If they wanted to apply it, they could strip him of the win. Another stupid F1 rule that has no place. Of course, they chose to ignore it this time, but with it still in there, it could have been used....

I did not get to watch the race so I did not hear the comment about it. If I had, I would not have posted this. Still, the rule is just DUMB!!!!!

I thought Speed's point was removed when DC complained that Speed passed him under yellow.

Mentioned it on Speed Channel, not mentioned it about Scott Speed. Different situations! Certainly a rediculous rule.

Would anybody say it was a stupid rule if Fred stopped and grabbed a flag?

YES, a rule is a rule. It doesn’t matter which driver or team breaks them, I don't agree with half of them but I would rather see the FIA treat everyone the same from rookies to legends. If not why have rules in the first place.

I can see the point of the rule, but a flag isn't going to be too useful for fudging the vehicle weight.

You could equally say that, given the international nature of F1 teams (Toyota is based in Germany, for example), the idea of waving a national flag from an F1 car is silly. But Senna disciples would consider that sacriledge.

Massa didn't set the tradition, which pre-dated the current FIA rule. The ghost of Senna is going to haunt this poor kid -- who doesn't need the distraction from his own potential.

And FIA itself retains the notion of the flags and national anthems on the podium, so where does the line get drawn?

And what would happen to "apolitical" F1 if a driver insisted on the Quebec anthem instead of Canadian? (We've already seen a hint of it at Turkey.)

Under the circumstances (first brazilian winner of the brazil GP since Senna), I can see this as a one-off. But I hope it's over now, and Massa can go on to creating his own legend, rather than being overshadowed by someone else's.

    I agree..

It's a stupid rule but a rule none the less. The FIA can't play favorites. They better never impose that rule on anyone else. I guarantee that the next driver to win his home race will do the same thing because Massa got away with it.

    Absolutely.

It is a stupid rule where I don't see the point at all. It should be abandoned. There are a lot of ceremonial rules in F1 which simply choke the sport: Fans are officially not allowed to run onto the track after the race. Another one is no prize/position swapping on the podium, that was introduced after Zeltweg with MS giving 1st to Rubens on the podium after Rubens gave 1st to MS on the track.

I don't know this for sure, but I bet by now it is also prohibited to give a stranded F1 driver a ride. That used to be such a neat thing after a GP.

F1 has way too many technical rules. We don't need no protocol rules on top of that.

Well, the FIA facist brigade soon put a stop to that kind of fraternisation.

While I get the facist reference I have the feeling it is not just Mad Max but also Bernie. Bernie is a control freak of the worst kind and he has come up with a lot of the polishing the show stuff. The guy even insists on lining up the trucks in the paddock on one line. He is nuts.

Well, what you just say, Tifosi12, doesn't surprise me one bit.
I happen to know quite a lot about Bernie in his early days (I live near where he lived, and he is not remembered fondly), and that kind of attitude fits exactly with his persona. They say you should always worry about men of small stature getting into power.

The sooner we get rid of these two (Ecclestone & Mosley), the better. Two megalomaniacs together...

Wasn't this rule enacted primarily to keep spectators away from the cars. I can see where it would be a safety issue if fans swarmed the track to hand a driver a flag.

Nevertheless the idea of stripping a win for something as minor as this is a bit harsh.
