Actual F-cars owners only reply

You know, I’ve been involved in a few threads lately that where prospective buyers ask what they think is the best value between say a 348 or NSX. I also responded to one previous with the same basic question, only between Vetts, and 348’s.

After offering my honest opinions in both situations, it seemed like I got drawn into a brand slug fest.

I was amazed at just how many hard core Vetties, and NSXies reside in out F-Chat forum. After offering a honest and respectful opinion, both threads turned ugly with a few honest Ferrari enthusiasts defending our cars.

Now that I’m sitting here in my home office, basically dripping with Ferrari brand ego, It occurred to me

You know I’m really glad I own a Ferrari, even with all the maintenance issues. I own one because I like the cars, and think honestly if you like a different line of car, you not I belong in a different forum. I think most real world F-car owners, (meaning people that actually do own a Ferrari), vary rarely if ever lurk in the Corvette forum, or the NSX forum, whatever that may be. Were actually very secure in owning our cars, and don’t think most of us really give a chit, what the other guys are doing.

Now I’m sure there are those actual former Ferrari owners that actually purchased a car, (although some times I’m really suspect about this) wasn’t mentally prepared to deal with maintenance issues, couldn’t live with it, or afford it, and have moved on to a new type of car, and now live in a sort of automotive nervana. Just them and there new good, (non Ferrari) sports car. All I can say is more power to them, I just wish they would go hang out in the sports car nirvana land of there new super car friends, and leave us poor delusional Ferrari owners alone.

You know, this is our forum, we don’t, I don’t have to justify the type of car I choose to drive to anyone, and I’m not asking anyone else to justify the type of car they own to me.
The fact is the fastest sports cars in the world are Ferraris. This is a claim no other car brand can make.

Personally, anyone posting to me without a profile filled out, and un-suscribed will be totally ignored, I would like to encourage other actual owners to do the same, and let the lurkers go back to Corvette land, or NSX land, or where ever they belong.

Honestly, tell us how you really feel.

This is the problem with general access boards, and who really cares. It's like the proverbial "tell me, do I look fat in this"! Experience teaches you to be extremely careful how you respond.

What's important, as I see it, is that you are very happy with your choice of cars, you enjoy the discussions this board offers, and you have a sense of pride in your ownership.

Don't let the others get to you. They are entitled to their opinions.

I glanced through the recent NSX/348 threads and one impression I got was how many Ferrari owners had (or have) an NSX. Many acknowledged the virtues of each car. While there were a few strong opinions expressed I really enjoyed reading the threads.

Indytech: This is off topic but I noticed from your profile you have a 914. I like those, although I've had little time driving them. I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of yours.

 

There's no rational justification for owning a Ferrari. So we get these threads from time to time, because there are a lot of sensible people who drive Corvettes, Vipers, NSXs, Supras, 3000GTs and other high-performance cars.

I get sucked into a lot of these, but truth is I would never try to talk one of my friends into buying a Ferrari or Lambo, and anyone seriously weighing a Corvette versus a 355 is on the wrong board. You have to be really smitten by the aesthetics of it all and the feel, sound and smells.

I am.

So, I open the checkbook, pay the man, and when I pick up the car after whatever's been done -- new hose, new switch, some adjustment -- I start it up and I feel privileged to be driving it, not resentful that it costs more to service.

All of the threads about how my 328 is obsolete, or a 348 breaks down more than an NSX, or the Firestang-Z can smoke the 355 are really a bunch of noise. The discussions about which Ferrari to buy, OTOH, and what to watch for are probably the best stuff on FChat (bikinis excepted). So, just deal with the other and move along, I say.

So is my Opinion Worthless ? I have seen EVERY Sports Car BASHED by Ferrari Owners. There are Numerous GREAT Cars, Ferrari is just 1 of them.I Luv em all & to each his own ! Yes i Lurk & Post on C.F. & Z06Vette.

I do agree with you Ken, except in one point....I think that un-subscribed people may participate on this forum. There are sections restrictily for subscribed people, as you know.

As I said on the other thread ( 348/ NSX) I don't like to read comparations between Ferraris and Hondas or Toyotas , or even BMW. It's OK when you compare it with a Porsche.

So, I'll like to read your personal impressions between your actual 348 and the 930 you owned before.

Ferrari is the most powerful brand in the world - its history, the stories, the motorsport success, the F1 domination, the beautiful and fast cars. From virtually any era their cars have been the fastest and the most successful, resembling the benchmark for that period - 250 SWB, 250 GTO, 288 GTO, F40, F355, Enzo, etc etc. Values demonstrate this.

Other marques have had great success too, but perhaps without the continued consistency.

Corvette have dominated Le Mans in recent years.

The NSX was another benchmark car, developed from F1.

Lamborghini have dramatic styling, dramatic colours, and dramatic doors.

Aston Martin have James Bond, styling, and sound.

Porsche have Le Mans domination from the 1980s, reliability, and performance.

Perhaps only Bugatti or Maserati can match the emotion and history of Ferrari.

 

I love my Ferrari more than any other car I've ever owned.

I thought that when I went through a Porsche stage and an AMG stage. So I'm sure they love their Chevy or Honda or whatever more than anything else they have ever owned.

I just consider them car owners who have not made it to the end of the line yet.

Interesting thread after reading the 348 vs. NSX thread. I would agree mostly with your statements. It seems most Ferrari owners were discussing virtues of both, but the NSX owners could only bash the F-car. Perhaps they have never owned a Ferrari.

In my experience most Ferrari owners have been somewhere else before coming to Ferrari. Myself included. That lends some credibility to any discussion.

If you have not owned a Ferrari (or 348 for that matter) you have no business offering negative opinions that you may have read in a 10 year old magazine.

Ferrari owners discussing virtues about both?? You need to seriously re-read that thread. Other people come here to set the facts straight about their cars. It's not because they're insecure, it's because it's irritating to see ignorant people make incorrect statements about your pride and joy. I've been here many years and seen many misinformed information posted about other cars especially the NSX. Don't turn an opinion in to a fact and not expect someone more knowledgeable to step up and correct you.

Of course you'll always get a troll who'll start name calling and make the thread ugly. With the exception of these idiots, I think it's great that non-ferrari owners join in on the conversation. Ferrarichat wouldn't be what it is today without non-ferrari owner contributions.

 

After several years and several Ferraris, you will (hopefully) come to the conclusion that most people are FOS. Drive what you want. If it's a Ferrari then great. If you wanted it for yourself because you respect the marque, the history and all that, that's one thing....If you bought it because needed to prove some point to others, then you should have spent your money on therapy.

 

I see where guys are coming from on this issue..Maybe you don't have to be an owner to chime in but you should know what you are talking about before doing so.
It just pisses guys off when you offer an opinion and you don't sound educated when giving it.
If guys want to talk about other brands other than Ferrari then you should probably go elsewhere. I am sure the guys on other boards would throw you out if you started talking Italian cars on a Vette board.

I thought I was perfectly qualified to comment since I actually shopped both cars at the same time before making the choice of a 348 Spider. It was the best choice, I can tell you. It certainly was not the least expensive. At this stage in my life (mid-life crisis age), I can afford either one and all the maintenance that comes along.

I drove the socks off the NSX, but it left me wanting more. One drive around the block in the Spider, top down, and I knew this was what I had to have. It didn't matter if the NSX was faster (it wasn't) or cornered better (prolly did) or anything else. It just wasn't a Ferrari.

How can we explain this to the NSX crowd? They are like engineers who perpetually refine our cars into sterility. They crave mechanical perfection and once they have it, they can't see how they designed all the character and soul out of the car at the same time. This is where I think BMW excells - they make improvements (for better or worse), but attempt to retain the BMW-ness of the car.

 

I agree with this the most. I would add that I can get excited just sitting in my car in the garrage. I think when I have my first child I will sit the baby in the seat of my ferrari so That child can smell the Leather at an early age. That way they will know if they are sitting in a Ferrari even if they are blind later on when they are adults. Just love the hand craftedness of the car and quality that went into the interior. I dont believe in paying for a forum site. Ive been a programmer for years, Im a memeber to a huge number of forum sites(this is the only car related one.) Im a Moderator at some. I just think its wrong. There is advertising here and with this suscribed thing, they make a killing! Forums are meant to be a free place to be. I do pay for 1 forum site because they dont have advertising and the forum is supported by sponsors, almost the same as this one. But if I buy something its from a sponsor here.

I liked what you posted about your issue about non-Fcar owners. Personally Ive seen the threads and dont even go in there. How can you argue about a Fcar when the other person doesnt understand it! No point at all. In a way, the Fcar wins, they are here posting arnt they? And if you really gave them a choice of which car to own, we all know the anser dont we. Your talking to a wall sometimes.

Thank you, this is exactly my point. Anger from non-Ferrari owners because we don't like there cars on this site. This is a Ferrari chat site not an NSX site. We are not here to defend the NSX. Few Ferrari owners really care much about the NSX. I don't remember any other thread in recent past about the NSX positive or negative.

I'm sure there are alot of legitimate contributions from non-Ferrari owners, but your statement is quite a stretch. Arguing that your NSX, Corvette, Subaru is better than a Ferrari on the site is futile. Go somewhere else!

Yeah +2!!! They may think that we have never heard of any other car and they are actually providing us some sort of enlightenment

 

The main reason why I own a Ferrari (make that two as of today) is because it breaks down regularly and gives me something to do during the weekends, and complain about... l would be bored to tears if I had a perfectly reliable car - heck I sold my Porsche because it didn't have enough problems.... a Honda would be the kiss of death for me (although having driven an NSX for while it is a good car but boring)!

 

I dont want to make it sound like I am a Corvette Lover or anything. But I do have 3 Corvettes one being a 2000 vette which is one of the fastest in the world. I also have 2 Ferraris and many other cars. Yes people are aarogant and dream of owning cars like ours but then again let them dream .....Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me......Thats my theory.
