How much "mechanical" noise is normal for a 308 QV (ie: valve train, belt tensioners, alt/air cond/waterpump, etc.) and how do you determine if tensioner bearings are good/bad ?
I have a very loud exhaust note, but at idle I also hear alot of mechanical whine. Not screech or chatter, just low level bearing/machine type noise. If I listen to the entire motor at different points using a mechanics stethescope, all seems pretty normal. The loudest bearing noise is when I contact the cam belt covers.
Belts, tensioner bearings, waterpump were done 5000 miles (and 4 years) ago
by a trusted mechanic (grand touring classics). 31,000 on car as of today.
Comments and experience would be appreciated.

    Thanx,
    -Lou

    Lou,

It's quite a bit. I was suprised in the amount of noise my qv made over my old carb car.

    Thanks, Matteo.
Thats the kind of info I was looking for.
Also, upon further investigation with a pen light and the trusty stethescope rod, I think I have found the source. It seems as though the water pump belt tensioner pully bearing might be going (super loud with the stethescope on the boss just behind the pully). I know that the water pump belt config is a little different on some 308s Euro vs USA, wonder how quik I can get a bearing ?
I'm tracking the car next weekend (or maybe not?).
Hello by the way, nice to hear from you.

I don't know if the h2o tensioner assembly is the same on your car as the 308 gt4 but I just replaced the bearings in mine and they are a standard bearing that I got from a local bearing supply retailer. Fairly cheap and in stock. The issue (there's always an issue isn't there?) with mine was that it was difficult to remove the old bearings because you can't simply press them out as there is a snap ring in the middle separating the two. You may have to rig up some sort of pulling device. On mine after some soft pressing and minor banging one bearing fell out. Then I had access to snap ring, removed it and pressed the second bearing out. But if both bearings were seized in there...good luck.

Are you sure the cam drive bearings are OK, no signs of oil leaks down there and so on? I should think it wouldn't be a good idea to track the car if these were on the way out.

You could run the engine for a short time with the water pump belt loosened and check that the noise goes away.

Definatley w/p tensioner bearings, cam bearings are fine. Replaced the bearings and track ready (I do find it strange that these bearings went south at 30,000 miles though).
