Numbering system for next year.

No they just were preparing as if Alonso wasnt going to win the championship.

Next years numbers will be
1. Alonso
2. McLaren
3. Fisi
4. Kova
5. Kimi/Mass
6. Massa/Kimi
etc

 

Ferrari got screwed 2nd in Constructors and Drivers but numbers 5 and 6, they boycott this stupid system with all its flaws. Personally I think that each team should have their own numbers and that the top 5 WDC should get 1-5.

 

Whatever happened to Ferrari getting either #1 and #2, OR #27 and #28 ?

 

that #27 & #28 was banished by the FIA a few years ago. now it's just normal numberings, excluding the number 13. all in all, the Scuderia will still retain #5 & #6.

The rule used to be that teams got numbered by their entry into F1, and the WDC winning team swapped numbers with the previous winners.

That's how Ferrari got 27 and 28, and kept them until the numbering system changed -- because they didn't win a WDC between 1979 and 2000.

I'd guess they changed the numbering system, because they figured it wasn't worth keeping the Lancia, Auto-Union, or Maserati numbers reserved.


Renault got the short stick, too -- WDC and WCC and wound up with 3&4.

Curiously: When I plugged pre-2003 scoring into the spreadsheet, with either the old 9-6-4-3-2-1, or 10-6-4-3-2-1 (top-6) points systems, the top five drivers would have finished in the same order, but Ferrari would have taken the constructor's championship.

Which, I guess, shows that Fisi did contribute to the WCC win, under the top-8 scoring system.

 

The FIA should also make the points system better too, some teams go the entire season without scoring anypoints and the winner only gets 2 more points than second. The points should probably go 1-12 with first getting
25,17,12,10,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. It would give a bigger difference between 1 and 2 in a race and would allow more teams to score points and make it much more competitive for the mid range teams.

 

IMO, i prefer the old point scoring system, 10,6,5,4,3,2,1..or something like that. if the FIA wants the top 8 to get the points, it's better if they increased the winner points.

with now just 2 points seperate the winner and the best loser, it doesn;t make anysense.

Massa can be crowned champ next season, if he finished 2nd in every race , and the there's no consistent winner...heck...Kimi almost did it in 2003.

 

Agreed. It should be more for the winner, this isn't Nascar. It was a change because Ferrari was wiping up all the points in 02, that is why they changed it.

 

yup. just like the 1 tyre rule...it was, without any doubt, the stupidest thing in the history of FIA

 

They didn't want a repeat of '01, when Schumi threatened to skip the last three races because the championship was already decided. (Between 9/11 and Zinardi's accident, his heart wasn't in it.) In '02, the championship was locked with five races still to go.

But they changed from the 9-6-4-3-2-1 '90s points system to giving 10 to the winner, because a three point gap for first wasn't enough to keep someone from winning the WDC without ever winning a race.

Part of the issue with the points is the number of races. When there were six events in a season, nine points for a win was a significant portion of the season total.

But with drivers pulling over a hundred points in an 18 race season, a two point difference between first and second just isn't worth fighting over -- especially when you have to save your engine for the next race.

So there's the dilemma: You need enough points differences to make fighting for position worthwhile, while keeping a dominant team from finishing the championship before the season plays out.
