    Philip,

They're most likely Cromodoras. Yes, Ferrari of San Diego painted the spokes black as an option. Coker is the exclusive distributor of Michelin® Vintage Tires in North America. Tire Rack has them occasionally. Either way, they're expensive.

If you are happy with an aftermarket wheel, you can get 17" Ronal RT wheels and 225/45/17 tires for about the same price.

After that, your tire price will be 1/2 of what the 390's cost.

I'm planning on getting a set of these next year when they are back in stock.

You won't find many good options with the 14's when it comes to speed rated tires. Thats why my 14's are in a stack and I am running 16" reproduction QV wheels with Yokohama AVS ES100's. Like night and day.

1300.00 for the wheels and 500.00 for the tires.

    Phil,

Most owners with metric wheels (and even those with 14" wheels) are doing just what Spasso has advised.

Might I suggest this thread be moved to the 308 section and merged with all the other 308 TRX / replacement wheel threads - if it is then made sticky it will be even easier for all those who won't use the search function !

By 1980 they are most likely NOT Chromodora, as they cast the manufacturer into the mold, in raised lettering....

More likely they are Campagnolo or Speedline as they used a silk screened logo on the rim that would be lost in refinishing..

As noted the black paint treatment was a Left Coast Dealer treatment...carreaper has that info.....

Note all three companys had their own mold so they are NOT mix and match....you have to have like with like, to match.

Over my 20 years with my 308, it seems that every few years, these TRX tires get short in supply, and then Michelin cranks out a new batch. As you can expect, when they are in short supply, the price is high, and when the new batch shows up the price falls. That might change now that they are 20+ years old. I bought a new set 5 years ago for 680 (total price, delivered, for a set of 4 from Discount Tire), whereas the year before, the price was double. Coker has them, but they are always expensive.

One saving factor is that the Mustang GT of the same era used the same tire/size. You might want to call a local Ford dealer and see if they have a computerized inventory system that can check nationwide to see if a dealer has them in stock...if so, then you might find a reasonable price.

Your best long-term solution would be to buy the repro 16" rims and get better tires. If you keep the car a long time, you will be better off. If you sell it, you can always sell the repro rims to another F-Chatter.

In the UK (and I see no reason for the US of A to be different) Michelin have sold the moulds and the right to manufacture TRX tyres to a heritage tyre company. These companies are happy to do small runs of tyres - so the supply is more reliable but this comes at a price. In the UK, a TRX tyre for a 308 will cost £240 (US$ 450). The economics of switching to the non-metric rims is a no brainer.

For the reasons above this may have worked in the past but is not likely to help now.

    100pct the right answer :D

Ditch the TRW tires/wheel combo (you're chasing good money after bad)....get some 16" wheels...preferrable OEM, but repro in the alternative. Polished with black spokes? Yikes! ;)

I work in sales here at Coker, and always offer a discount to FChat members when they call in to me. The price I can get the 220/55VR390 for you is $301.84. They are out of stock at the moment but we have a shippment coming in a few weeks. Let me know if you have any questions, my phone# is 1-800-251-6336 ext.256.

This year, I bit the bullet and purchased a set of 16" QV mag wheels (real, not repros). In the long run, the tires will equalize overall costs, besides, there is a huge ride and handling improvement with the 16's.

How do you like the ES100 tires? Are they quiet? Ride quality? Steering response?

They are classified as a "summer" tire but do pretty good in the rain here in the Pacific Northwest. Way way better than the Michelin 14" tires.

Fairly soft with a 280 treadwear rating so they grip pretty good but still have a much better life than S02' or 3's.

They are pretty quiet due to the progressive tread design. Much quieter than the Falkens I am running on my Acura.

I have stock springs and shocks so the chop from the low profile tires is absorbed fairly well.

Steering response is much tighter by 2 over the 14" "clown" tires it came with because of the lower profiles.

They did not require a lot of weight to balance with minimal runout when spun. I had them siped before installation which improves traction.

    225/50-16" on the front
    245/45-16" on the rear

    NO RUBBING

Stock sizes were (if I remember correctly) 205/75-14"
The balloons look good on the car but it handles way better with the new ones.

The best part is all 4 for 100.00 or less EACH. RATED TO 186 mph FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME.
