It's not unheard of, but unless you wrote down exactly what it was it could not find, you're in for a fun time.

The recovery software is running as I type.

Back to "out of box" configuration....

Good thing it is only a week old. Not much on it, except for some pics from Fchat!

    This is the lapraop btw.

    Liked it 'till today

I tried to install the new IE and now I can't get IE to work at all. When opening it I see a flash of a window, then it's gone. No processes running or anything. Quite funny if you ask me. I tried to un-install it, but it says I can't uninstall the program for some reason. I think it says it can't find the program.

I just left it. We never use IE anyway...I use firefox and my wife uses opera...

    screw it.

I still yet to this understand why even bother with IE? It crashes, virus prone, & is buggy as Hell. I'm surprised you haven't used Fire Fox 2.0 yet.

Downloaded and tried IE7 here, numerous glitches and still can’t adjust the size of text properly, sticking with Firefox 2, plus the extensions are invaluable.

Also windows media player 11 is out now, worth a look if your not locked into iTunes.

I have a problem with my computer at home. I get the Black screen/White text image, like after the current is cut and it says I can restart Windows, restart from last good configuration etc. Whatever I choose, nothing works and it goes back to this screen. WTH?

normally problems where the system just shuts down like that are down to the power supply unit or failing motherboard. Have a look on majorgeeks.com you can download software (asus probe, speedfan)to monitor your power supply to see if it fluctuates too much.

Is it expensive to fix or I am better off buying a new PC? Also should I try to salvage anything from the old one?

Power Supply is cheap, mother board is a couple hundred depending on the computer. It could be something with a program you installed, or a virus. Could be a lot of things...

What was the last thing you did with the computer before this started happening?

I wouldn't replace you computer just yet, check for viruses and possibly do a reinstall of windows (format then install), this may have been corrupted at some point. If the problem remains i'd check psu with the software tools above.

In theory you can do a re-install over the top of your current windows install without losing files, but I’ve found this method often doesn’t solve problems and can cause a few of its own.

Do back up your files; can you copy them to cd or dvd? If not it might be worth getting an external hard disk drive you can plug into your computer to copy files to and create a back up. It’s never a good idea to have all your files in one place, I have copies of everything stored on an external hard drive like this one (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10792 ) both to protect against hardware failure and virus and as protection against someone stealing my computer.

Only once you’ve made copies of your files do a format and reinstall windows.

So far IE7 is OK here. But it’s probably safer to run Firefox.

I've seen it where in Task Manager it may not show it running under 'Applications', but it may show it under 'Processes', it would be 'IEXPLORE.EXE' and NOT 'explorer.exe'.
Firefox is terrible in this respect, it will not show it as an app running, but it's all over the place in 'Processes'.

Remember that if you try to start Firefox but it won't start - it may think it's already running.

I had IE 7 Beta optimized for Yahoo, downloaded IE7 and lost everything. Couldn’t even do a recovery, some files were missing.
Had to format the hard drive and re-install Windows XP, and I’m still working on it.

Thanks for the tip. I use Cacheman XP, which shows a running list of all processes running and allows me to tweak them as I wish, including killing processes. IE never shows up. It's strange. It's like after it starts, it shuts itself down for some reason, and I can't uninstall it.

When I reloaded my system, I didn't even bother to do security updates, which screw it up even more.

I use IE for 1 purpose only:

    to download other browsers.
