Hey, anyone got any tips on self-storage in northern NJ? I need to move the contents of my apartment (bed, couch, some dressers, BUNCH of artwork, books, clothes etc...), as well as the contents of two smaller NYC storage units, into storage in NJ for a few months.

"Extra Space Storage", on River Road in Edgewater, has been highly recommended. Called them today and the 10' x 10' and 10' x 15' units are around $200 - $290 per month... Seems pretty high to me.

Anyone got any good experiences with other places? Definitely need a modern, clean, well-lighted, accessible place.

Thanks in advance for any info.

    Hey Jawad,

I'm from south Jersey so the contacts here will not help you very much, but I can say that similar units here are definitely much less in terms of dollars.
The reason for my response is (and you may already be aware) to tell you to be careful that the unit is climate controlled, as you mentioned that you will be storing artwork, etc. If you are, then great, you have no worries about cold and the effects it poses to wood, etc. Also be sure to protect your stuff from dirt, as most of these places are inherently dusty. So you avoid the concern of cold effect on wood case goods and dust on art and fabrics, ideally, it would make sense to rent a climate controlled indoor unit as opposed to the outdoor ones. Just my .02...
    Hope you're well.

I agree with Jeff. If you are storing fabrics, clothing, artwork, electronics, etc., go for the extra money and rent an indoor, climate controlled unit. My daughter did that this summer to store her things between apartments. She had no problems and everything came out just the way it went in. It is definitely worth the bucks, unless your stuff is total junk. In terms of locations, grab the yellow pages in the area you want to store your things.

    Thanks Jeff and Steve.
Yes, I will be storing artwork (and definitely NOT junk, at that). I've enquired about the individually climate controlled units and been told they cost even more... Seems very odd to me to pay anything close to $250-$300/month in NJ (sorry, no insult intended, but those are NY prices). This particular facility came highly recommended because it is (I'm told) clean... They tell me the building is never less than 50 degrees or more than 80, but this is a wide range for art...

Not sure... Going to try to look into it this weekend...

    Any other advice is welcome.

Thanks -- hope you're both well also.

Try this web site. I have used them before and they are very good here in NJ.
http://www.publicstorage.com/index.aspx. Although I don't know what zip code to put in for you? I put in 07503 - West Paterson and a radious of 20 miles. West Patterson/Clifton is very close to Edgewater too. Check it out. Anything close to Fort Lee NJ, near the NYC border, you will pay top dollar. Hope it helps.

    Jawad,

Be very careful, do your homework ( contact better business bureau , chamber etc.) and PLEASE read the damn lease carefully. very carefully , read it again BEFORE you sign or think about putting your stuff in there (might be the lawyer in my but I actually read things I sign) also talk to your insurance agent about the new location of your property and its value.

also, upstate NY might be cheaper from some I heard about.

Thanks, will check it out. :)

Ha ha... This is funny. Being a lawyer too, I always read what I sign (and, with things like this, am usually horrified at how anti-consumer it is and how little choice I actually have in the matter...) But in all seriousness, you sound like you're speaking from experience -- bad experience at that. Any nasty tricks I should look out for in particular? I've had storage units with Manhattan Mini Storage for years now... So far, nothing dramatic.

I will tell you a funny story,

I rented a car at LAX a few years back before I was a "preferred renter", anyway, the counter lady askes me to intial the agreement in all these places, one of them is that I have read teh terms and condition o fthe rental agreement....what they get you to sign is not the full contract. so before I intial I actually ask for these terms and conditions that I am supposed to have read, she is stunned. literally says it is just "boiler plate, just sign it"...I say it refers to this other stuff that I should read...they go in the back and look for the rest of the contract, after a while the station manager comes oout with a copy they found. I start looking at this thing, some 30 odd pages! Well it really did n't matter since after reading this contract you would never rent a car from them, ever! the bottom line is the lady looks at me and asks me if I was a lawyer , she says in the 7 years she has worked there and the 1,000's of cars she has rented NO ONE has ever asked to see or read it! So much for consumer adhesion contracts... anyway as an FYI, the rental agency just sent updates and changes in the rental agreements (as preferred they sent them to me in advance) and they actually made it much LESS consumer freindly)
